Are you passionate about playing a vital role in maintaining a city's heartbeat? The Town of Erie is seeking a dedicated Fleet Technician for our Public Works Department, a position that offers both challenge and reward in equal measure. In this dynamic role, you'll be the linchpin ensuring the seamless operation of our diverse fleet. Your day-to-day responsibilities will encompass managing and maintaining an inventory of fleet materials and parts, in alignment with the scheduled maintenance requirements of our mechanical equipment. This includes a wide array of vehicles from heavy-duty machinery like loaders and dump trucks to light-duty automobiles and trucks, as well as specialized equipment like riding lawn mowers and tractors.

Your role is not just confined to inventory management. You'll engage in hands-on service and repair duties, which cover a spectrum of tasks including tune-ups, mechanical work, electrical repairs, and welding. Your expertise will be crucial in performing minor repairs and tune-ups on various types of engines, including gasoline, diesel, and electric. Additionally, your role will extend beyond the workshop as you respond to service calls and perform emergency repairs and road tests to diagnose and resolve fleet malfunctions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential

  • Procure parts related to vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs including tires, tools, filters, liquids, wear parts and related materials. Organize, track, and maintain inventory of all filters, service and frequently used Fleet related materials.
  • Deliver to, pickup from and assist with outsourced work provided by Venders.
  • Use Towns asset management system for tracking, documenting, and completing Fleet related tasks and/or service orders.
  • Assist with inspections, diagnoses, and routine maintenance service needs. Assist with a variety of heavy and medium-duty fleet unit repairs (including but not limited to, loaders, graders, dump trucks, and street sweepers); light-duty automotive fleet units (automobiles, and trucks); and small fleet units (riding lawn mowers, bobcat, and tractors).
  • Show ability to perform minor repairs and tune-ups on gasoline engines, diesel engines, compressed natural gas, electric, and alternate fuels.
  • Assist Fleet Mechanics with all mechanical, electrical and computer systems to include brakes, batteries, wiring, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, and hydraulic systems.
  • Assist on service calls on fleet units to perform emergency repairs; conducts road tests of fleet units to diagnose any malfunction; evaluates fleet units experiencing frequent breakdowns to determine cause and attempt to prevent future occurrences.
  • Operates hand and power shop tools to perform minor repairs and/or to fabricate machine parts for fleet units.

Safety

  • Ensures all hand and power tools are in safe and efficient operating condition.
  • Responsible for maintenance, safety and cleanliness of shop area.

Administrative and Customer

  • Processes fleet related purchase orders and invoices; prepares work orders and estimates of time and parts needed; maintains other records as needed; maintains regularly schedule maintenance items
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Two (2) years of experience with light and/or heavy automotive maintenance.
  • Valid Colorado Driver's License and satisfactory driving record.

A combination of education and experience may be considered.

CERTIFICATES/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS

  • Required to obtain a valid Colorado Commercial Driver's License Class B within one year.
  • ASE Certifications preferred.
  • Flagger's Certificate within one year.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Knowledge of:

Safety practices and procedures related to vehicle and fleet maintenance (strong knowledge). Good knowledge of light and heavy maintenance Fleet Units and automotive apparatus; care and operation of internal combustion engines, of hydraulic systems, transmissions and differentials of electrical motors and vehicles. Knowledge of tools, fleet units and safe and productive procedures used in the overhaul, repair, preventive maintenance, welding, adjustment of gas and diesel powered engines and fleet units as well as other general repair techniques. Basic knowledge of personal computer to prepare written reports.Including the ability to maintain records, account for parts, materials and deliveries related to the Fleet Division.

Skills in:

Ability to use or learn to use hand tools and operate vehicles, equipment and other mobile machinery. Ability to complete basic math such as how to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to trouble-shoot and resolve problems involving variables in any standardized situation.

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos and carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationship with employees and the public. Ability to effectively present information in a one-on-one and/or small group situation, to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to work independently and demonstrate good time management skills to plan and accomplish assigned workloads as required. Ability to stay abreast of current trends in the area of Fleet Maintenance.

Environmental Factors:

Work is performed in an inside standard shop environment as well as an outside setting. Frequent to constant use of a personal computer or other electronic devices. Work may involve competing demands, performing multiple tasks, and working to deadlines. Tasks frequently require outside work with moderate noise levels, exposure to chemicals and gases, fumes, or dust as well as vibrations, use of light equipment operations and local travel. Tasks occasionally require working with/in extreme temperatures, high noise levels, heavy equipment operations, and/or working in traffic. Tasks may occasionally include walking on uneven surfaces, working at heights and out of town travel.

Physical Factors:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is consistently grasping, fingering, and handling items as well as talking and hearing. Employee will frequently be sitting, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, squatting or reaching for extended periods of time with frequent use of near visual acuity and moving of objects weighing over 10 and 50 pounds. Occasionally tasks require balancing, use of far visual acuity, color discrimination, and peripheral vision. Employees may rarely have tasks requiring running, climbing, use of depth perception or moving objects weighing over 100 pounds.
