Summary of Position
Search for Common Ground seeks a Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) advocacy fellow to support the Children and Youth division's global YPS advocacy work, with a focus on the U.S. The fellow will also support international advocacy around youth protection. Young people and people of color are particularly encouraged to apply.

The fellow will gain a unique insight into the Youth, Peace, and Security agenda and how to influence U.S. policy through this program. In this role, the fellow will support policy objectives aimed at 1) strengthening institutional commitments to youth participation and protection in peace and security policy and practice through youth-led advocacy to the U.S. government, 2) facilitating collaboration between youth partners in the US and in other countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia on YPS advocacy. The fellow will contribute to YPS policy partnerships and strategies, conduct direct advocacy meetings and briefings, and produce policy research and writing. The fellow will report to Search's Children & Youth Senior Manager and will work closely with the U.S. YPS Coalition and Search's Global Affairs and Partnerships team.

Key responsibilities:


A. Strengthening institutional commitments to youth participation and protection in peace and security policy (including a focus on youth who face sexual and identity-related violence)
  • Work with the US YPS Coalition and other youth partners to develop and implement social media campaign(s) on YPS and youth protection
  • Organize "Youth Advocacy Day(s)" in-person and online for youth advocates and partners to hold advocacy meetings on the Hill and with the U.S. government on YPS and youth protection issues
  • Support advocacy around institutional commitments to youth participation and protection, such as the creation of a Children and Youth Congressional Caucus and the creation of a Children and Youth White House Council, in partnership with the U.S. YPS Coalition including conducting policy research and developing advocacy materials, as needed
  • Support and conduct outreach and meetings with the Department of State and USAID to integrate YPS principles into existing strategies, such as the Global Fragility Act and Women's Peace and Security strategy

B. Facilitating collaboration between youth partners in the US and in other countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia on YPS advocacy.
  • Facilitate regular meetings of the US YPS Coalition and discussions with the Global YPS Coalition, with a focus on youth protection in civic spaces
  • Attend and contribute to meetings and strategic coordination of The Children's Policy and Funding Initiative and .
  • Support and facilitate meetings of a youth protection advocacy team through the USAID-funded Youth Excel global program
  • Map and conduct outreach to new youth groups and activists, with a focus on youth who face identity-related violence and hardship
  • Complete training of trainers on the Common Ground Approach to Advocacy, then train youth advocates and partners on the Common Ground Approach to Advocacy
  • Develop opinion and policy piece(s) on strengthening youth protection (including from sexual and identity-based violence) and participation in peace and security, and support other youth advocates to do so
  • Host events (in-person and virtually) on sexual violence, safeguarding, and protection of young people in partnership with youth partners and advocates in the U.S. and abroad

Duration: The fellowship will last for a period of 8 months, between March 2024 and February 2025, depending on the agreed-upon rate. During this time, the fellow will work on a part-time basis as an hourly employee for an average of 20 hours per week.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with young people (under the age of 25) on advocacy
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills
  • Experience in strategic communications using social media platforms
  • Knowledge of the global Youth, Peace, and Security agenda, as well as the Women, Peace, and Security agenda
  • Experience conducting policy research and writing

With this fellowship, Search wants to elevate the voices of youth from areas directly affected by violence, as well as voices of youth from backgrounds not often heard in U.S. policy-making circles.
