POSITION DESCRIPTION:

T                                              This Pharmacist will perform a wide variety of activities in accordance with the scope of practice for pharmacy as defined in Article 137, Section 6801 of the New York State Education Law. This Pharmacist will perform various duties including but not limited to ensuring OPWDD regulations are adhered to, such as actively participating as a member of the treatment team to ensure that the management and administration of medication is conducted in the safest possible manner. Medical drug regimen reviews are required to be conducted regularly to ensure safe and effective medication use. The Pharmacist will serve as a member of assigned committees and workgroups as well as providing consultation services when needed.

 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·       Practice the profession of pharmacy consistent with the scope of practice as conveyed in State statute.

·       Provide professional guidance and answer questions relating to pharmacy policies and procedures as well as other pharmacy issues.

·       Provide guidance, and oversight to staff, and intervene and resolve problems as necessary.

·       Identify training needs and arrange for provision of training.

·       Ensure compliance pertaining to the practice of Pharmacy, and federal, State, local, and agency laws, codes, rules and regulations.

·       Recommend updates to DDSOO and Statewide Pharmacy policies and procedures, as required, and forward through the approval process.

·       Participate in committees and workgroups as assigned.

·       Work collaboratively with the healthcare team and providers on medication safety, reducing adverse drug reactions.

·       Conduct, review and monitor medication regimen reviews ensuring safe drug use, the cost-efficient use of resources, and optimum health outcomes. Collaborate with the healthcare team to reduce polypharmacy and the use of antipsychotic medications, whenever possible.

·       Facilitate communication and coordination with consultants providing medication regimen reviews to ensure the health and safety of individuals receiving services.

·       Collaborate with physicians, nurses, psychologists, treatment team leaders, and other healthcare professionals. Serve as a member of the behavioral rights committee, medication safety committee and other teams that promote the provision of evidence-based treatments and behavioral/mental health services to persons with developmental disabilities.

·       Review, select and maintain appropriate Medicare part D plan coverage for individuals residing in State Operated Programs that optimizes prescribed medication regimen with fiscal consideration.

·       Assist with prior authorizations, quantity limitations, and treatment exceptions.

·       Provide professional guidance to Directors, DDSOO staff and Providers on medication regulations and operational and policy/program considerations to ensure compliance with New York State and federal laws, rules and regulations.

·       Provide technical assistance and guidance to DDSOO staff and/or community agencies about pharmacy medication policy and standards. Respond to telephone calls, e-mail and info line inquiries.

·       Review and analyze pharmacy expenditures within Region 4. Identify and resolve billing discrepancies for procurement of medications through Office of General Services contract vendors. Facilitate communication with long term care pharmacies for providing and improving distribution services for medication to ensure the health and safety of individuals receiving services.

·       Delegate tasks and assignments to subordinate staff. Provide supervision, guidance and oversight to subordinate staff by setting priorities and deadlines. Review, monitor and evaluate staff performance through performance evaluations and mandatory training completion as necessary.

·       Collaborate with Revenue Support Field Office and Business Office to help resolve insurance billing issues.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a license and current registration to practice pharmacy in New York State.
