BIOFerm, a Madison, WI based renewable energy company, is hiring a Tax Accountant. This role will have responsibility for ensuring compliance with tax laws specific to the construction industry, preparing and reviewing tax returns, and providing valuable tax planning advice. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction tax regulations and possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are essential for success in this role.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Prepare and review tax returns.
  • Ensure accuracy and compliance with relevant tax laws and regulations.
  • Conduct thorough research on complex tax issues, such as depreciation, cost segregation, and tax credits, providing recommendations to minimize tax liabilities and maximize financial benefits for the company.
  • Collaborate with project managers, sales, and finance team members to gather required financial information, including project costs, revenue recognition, and supporting documentation.
  • Analyze financial data and calculate tax obligations, deductions, and credits for accurate and timely filing of tax returns, taking into account industry-specific rules and regulations.
  • Advise management on industry relevant tax planning strategies, highlighting potential risks and opportunities for tax savings.
  • Stay up to date with changes in relevant tax laws, regulations, and accounting practices, and ensure compliance with new requirements.
  • Respond to tax authorities' inquiries, notices, and audits, and work closely with internal team members to address any tax-related issues.
  • Provide guidance and support to team members, reviewing their work and providing constructive feedback as necessary in relation to tax matters.
  • Assist with financial statement preparation and perform general accounting tasks as needed.
Competencies & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. CPA certification is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience working as a Tax Accountant or in a similar role, preferably within the construction industry or a public accounting firm specializing in construction.
  • In-depth knowledge of tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements, including experience with industry-specific tax codes and deductions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data related and provide accurate tax advice.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex tax concepts to colleagues and effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team, demonstrating a proactive and self-motivated attitude while addressing tax challenges.
  • High ethical standards and a commitment to maintaining company and client confidentiality.
  • Continuous learning mindset, keeping up to date with industry trends and changes in tax regulations.
  • Intermediate to advanced level of experience with Excel and other Microsoft Office programs.
  • Experience with Acumatica ERP system preferred.
  • Ability to lift at least 35 pounds.
  • Valid US driver’s license.
  • Must be authorized to work for any company in the United States. Must not require sponsorship, or continued sponsorship to work for any company in the United States.
