Job Description: The Appliance Mechanic is responsible for performing repair of common household appliances, having technical knowledge of operating systems of stoves, microwaves, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, laundry washers and dryers. This includes components replacements associated with the Military Family Housing and Bachelor Housing Facilities. The Appliance Mechanic will be performing service call and preventative maintenance of Military Housing facilities which will require direct communications with Military Housing residents, Government and company quality inspectors.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to diagnose system problems and provide necessary repair actions
  • Employee will be required interact with the residents to determine the root cause of the problem and inform them of the corrective actions being taken
  • This position utilizes written service orders or individual work orders to identify the type of problem, and location for the required service. The employee is required to complete the service or work order paper work once the work is completed and to turn them into the service desk at the end of the shift. If issues arise during the service the employee will communicate via cell phone to the service desk for further direction
  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance actions that are required by this contract
  • Keeps supervisor apprised of unique situations and problems encountered
  • Proves service-call reports of task performed at the end of the work day
  • Uses a variety of hand tools, portable power tools and standard measuring instruments
  • Coordinates and receives service-call assignment log from office dispatcher daily
  • Follows assigned daily service-call visits to housing units; unless an emergency service-call has been dispatched
  • Will be scheduled for an on-call status periodically with other technicians to respond to call-outs after normal working hours as needed. Performs emergency repair calls as instructed and coordinated by the office dispatcher. May received emergency repair calls "after hours" (5:00 pm - 11:00 pm) for only stove and refrigerator, only for the following conditions. For stove appliance, all four range burners are not working. For refrigerator, only for the following conditions. For stove appliance, all four range burners are not working. For refrigerator, the freezer box unit is defrosting
  • Trouble-shoots components/systems of an appliance in determining the possible course of action in the allowed service time
  • Selects and installs the proper appliance part or component necessary for the work
  • Records information of work performed, part description repaired or replaced, include any notes on the appliance problem or comments offered by the user. Records to include change-out appliance that is removed from household. Document information of appliance type, brand name, model, serial number, and house address; including the (change out) replacement unit
  • Follows established safety procedures and utilizes safety protective equipment and clothing that pertains to a particular work. Ensures proper housekeeping practices are observed
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

As it relates to Powered Outdoor Appliances:

  • Diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul small engines used to power lawn mowers, chain saws, recreational sporting equipment, and related equipment. On the job, you would: Record repairs made, time spent, and parts used.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of planning and layout of work from product diagrams and schematics, appliance models and verbal instructions
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to maintain and correct storage of all tools, equipment, and appliance parts
  • Ability to provide service-call records of work performed, appliance stocked and parts inventory
  • Ability to adhere to all safety and health rules and regulations
  • Ability to deal with a variety of people in a professional and courteous manner in diversified situations
  • Ability to work with other employees and customers harmoniously
  • Ability to work on timely and cost-effective performance of duties

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years general appliance technician experience, with the knowledge and hands-on experience in trouble-shooting appliance component systems of stoves, refrigerator, washer, dryer, water heater and dishwasher
  • Experience with appliance repair; or completed an appliance technician certificate from a reputable vocational or trade school
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to obtain access to U.S. Government Installations through the Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS)

As it relates to Powered Outdoor Appliances:

  • Preferred small engine experience

Work Conditions:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work is subject to temperature extremes and inclement weather conditions. Work hours are subject to change, with overtime work as needed. Incumbent should be able to sit for extended periods of time, stand, walk, talk, hear and write. While performing duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit for long periods at a time; stand, use hands and fingers; handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds or more.


Physical Requirements:

  • Work is typically sedentary in nature and performed in an office setting
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time, stand, walk, talk, hear, and write
  • Must be able to lift 35 pounds
