Harris-Stowe State University is a historically Black institution (HBCU) located in the heart of vibrant mid-town St. Louis, Missouri. Harris-Stowe’s beautiful campus is minutes from the renown Gateway Arch, St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Art and History Museums, Forest Park and other cultural and educational institutions. Harris-Stowe’s diverse faculty and staff provide a wide range of academic programs to one of the most culturally diverse student bodies in the St. Louis region.


Job Summary

Serves as the senior administrative official for the planning and direction of all of the functions of the College of Education Programs provided at Harris-Stowe State University - both by the University alone and those involving the collaboration of other institutions of higher education. Assists in the recruitment of the faculty and staff of the College of Education and William Clay Early Childhood Center and gives all final recommendations for such to the Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs.


Essential Functions

  • Providing leadership and vision for the HSSU College of Education
  • Knowledge of accreditation procedures, and policies
  • Knowledge and experience in CAEP and state accreditation
  • Promoting a rigorous, research-based curriculum that incorporates innovative teaching practices;
  • Working collaboratively across the university and community to implement distinctive teacher preparation and educational studies programs;
  • Collaborating with faculty on program development, recruitment and retention initiatives;
  • Collaborating with other deans and the Office of the Provost to advance the university’s strategic academic priorities;
  • Recruiting an outstanding and diverse faculty who are actively engaged scholars and practitioners, using theory, research, and collaboration to enhance their work in a global, diverse, and technological society;
  • Ensuring that the college prepares professionals for productive roles in educational settings and community agencies;
  • Collaboratively developing, refining, and implementing appropriate policies within the college;
  • Assuring that the college’s strategic objectives are met through robust assessment practices;
  • Fostering a culture of reflective, evidence-based practice and inquiry within a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff;
  • Maintaining accreditations and endorsements with regional and national organizations;
  • Providing leadership in the evaluation and professional development of faculty, staff, and other personnel;
  • Providing oversight of the William Clay Early Childhood Center
  • Developing the college’s budget and providing oversight for effective resource management;
  • Assisting with fundraising and alumni activities;
  • Ensuring that all programs in the college are effectively administered and managed;
  • Fostering a culture of transparent and consistent communication with faculty and staff in the college, as well as with university and community partners; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned;
  • Advocating meaningful and innovative infusion of emerging technologies into on-campus and online instructional delivery;
  • Advance the acquisition of federal, state, and private grants/funds to support instructional innovations and support of students and faculty.


Minimum Education ad Experience

  • An earned doctorate in education or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • At least three years of experience working in higher education.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and demonstrated support and enhancement of diversity in both faculty and student populations.
  • Strong ability to relate to and work effectively with faculty and the University administration.
  • Commitment to developing technological innovations in all aspects of education, particularly the delivery of online coursework.
  • Desired demonstrated leadership in State, Regional and National efforts to improve public education.
  • Desired strong track record in securing external funding, particularly grants.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Good knowledge of principles and theory of teaching field
  • Good knowledge of practices and procedures of teaching.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational ability and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must have the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population.
  • Ability to focus on results and to commit on excellence.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle
  • Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a signification degree.


Working Conditions and Environment:

  • Work is routinely performed in a typical interior/office environment
  • Very limited or no exposure to physical risk
