Job Description

The Intern position is open to students enrolled in a Bachelors program, preferably with a focus in archives, history, museum studies, or another similar field. Under general supervision and mentorship, the Intern will provide support to our federal team’s administrative team, which will include research on various archiving methods, cataloging methods and other related library services and historical preservation services for proposals. In addition, the Intern will providing support for preparing material in a Law Library.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily:

  • Conduct research on a variety of cataloging, archiving and other library related services for proposal development
  • Identify list of nationwide MLIS and related degree programs with contact information
  • Assist with creating requisitions to build candidate pools
  • Creating marketing campaigns for outreach to federal libraries
  • Assist with providing support for preparing material in a Law Library which may include:
    • Providing collection accessioning, maintenance, preservation and inventory services
    • Shifting, shelving and retrieving collection items
    • Sorting and distributing materials
    • Using an Integrated Library System (ILS) and other online resources to identify information on collection items
    • Checking in new materials in an ILS to include serials (bound and unbound), monograph volumes, looseleaf updates and supplemental materials
    • Identifying missing items and submitting claim requests
  • Preservation services including binding preparation of titles in English and foreign languages
  • Providing inventory control and overall security of the Law Library’s collections by pin and linking monographs and serials and creating item and summary holding records in the ILS.
  • Special projects as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training, and/or work experience required.

  • A completed or in process bachelor's degree is required
  • Ability to conduct and transcribe oral history in English required
  • Coursework in archival and library metadata standards, systems, and best practices (EAD, MARC, DACS, RDA) or coursework within history is preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Voyager ILS is preferred
  • Knowledge of preservation and digitization, processing, and archival description for analog and born-digital materials preferred
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement archival services, workflows, programs, and policies preferred
  • Ability to develop and implement programs, exhibits, social media content, and other community outreach campaigns preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasionally up to (44) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials
  • Must be able to push book trucks weighing up to 400 lbs
  • Ensure security, safe handling and accountability of collections
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork
