Position Overview

Under the direction of the school Assistant Principal, the Long Term Substitute teacher will provide classroom coverage for core content (English, Math, Science, Social Studies/History) classroom teachers absent for an extended period of time. This individual will be responsible for teaching assigned content and creating a classroom environment that features a rich diversity of resources, engages student interest, promotes student leadership, and stimulates student learning.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

• Teaches content and skills in assigned subject areas utilizing school/site-designed curriculum
• Creates and implements lesson plans with the support of the Assistant Principal
• Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior
• Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
• Manages administrative assignments effectively and with a high level of professionalism and integrity, ensuring on-time submission of deliverables
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in education or related subject field (required)
• Must have or be eligible for certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (Within one (1) year of employment)
• Experience working with incarcerated or opportunity youth (preferred)
• Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies

Site Description

The Maya Angelou Academy at New Beginnings is a long-term juvenile facility in Laurel, MD. It serves youth ages 13-21 and is located inside New Beginnings Youth Development Center. Our students develop the academic, social, and employment skills they need to build rewarding lives and promote positive change.
