Job Title: K-12 Music Teacher

*Assignment K-5 Music

2024-25 SCHOOL YEAR

DEPARTMENT: MSS

SUPERVISION: Building Principal

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Communicate and meet with parents and school counselors on student progress and resolve any student problems.
  • Control the storage and use of school-owned property, make minor adjustments, and request repairs to instruments as required.
  • Cooperate with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and other functions.
  • Critique performance to identify errors and reinforce correct techniques.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.
  • Evaluate each student's musical growth and performance, assessing each individual's contribution to the performance of the group.
  • Evaluate students' interests, aptitudes, temperaments, and individual characteristics to determine suitable instruments for beginners.
  • Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Instruct students in music theory, harmony, score and sight-reading, composition, music appreciation, and provides individual or group vocal and instrumental lessons.
  • Lead orchestra and choral groups in regular and special performances for school programs, community activities, concerts, and festivals.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Plan a balanced music program and organize daily classroom work based on a teaching outline prepared for the course of study to meet curriculum requirements so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  • Plan, rehearse, direct, and coach students in their individual parts, fundamentals of musicianship, and ensemble performance.
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Select and requisition books, musical instrumentals, and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records. Order, store, and inventory musical instruments, music, and supplies.
  • Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned. Accompany students on field trips to musical performances.
  • Take training in programs necessary for each child's well-being (i.e. Bloodborne Pathogens, Mandatory Reporter, etc.)
  • Teach skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble).
  • Use repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for student's ages and skill levels.
  • Use the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and certification required by the Bureau of Indian Education and the State of Iowa.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and submit a certified driving record for review.
  • Must be able to pass a background check per P.L. 101-630, P.L. 101-647, and the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act.
  • Preferred endorsements 144 - K-8 Music and 145 - 5-12 Music
