GYH’s globally recognized Human Rights and Immigration Practice, is looking for a savvy, innovative, self-starter Law Practice Manager/Business Manager to oversee, direct, and improve the practice group’s operations, and partner with the practice group’s Managing Partner (MP) to manage the day-to-day business and strategic direction of our law firm.

***The Practice is currently located in Bethesda, Maryland but will relocate to NW, Washington D.C. in the next year.***


Position Summary:

The Law Practice Manager will be responsible for the effective and efficient management of the Practice, with a strong emphasis on financial performance, developing and leading an efficient and resourceful operations team, as well as supporting lawyer productivity and innovation. The Law Practice Manager will partner with the Managing Partner (MP) and Practice Group Leaders (PGLs), to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Practice Group, as well as to assist PGLs in the long-term strategy and financial health of the practice. The successful Law Practice Manager is a self-starter, experienced in law firm management, well-versed in financial strategy, budget drafting, and analysis, a problem-solver, and highly responsive to the changing needs of competitive and successful legal practice. The Law Practice Manager will successfully collaborate with other administrative department heads to address, improve, and simplify larger firm operations matters.


RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Financial Management: budgeting, financial reporting, and billing processes. Working closely with accountants and other financial professionals to ensure compliance with financial regulations and monitoring and improving the practice group’s financial health. Simplifying and improving financial reports to track, enhance and support attorney productivity,
  • Human Resources: overseeing the recruitment, onboarding, and performance evaluation processes for staff. Ensuring the practice group complies with all relevant laws, regulations and ethical standards.
  • Operations: managing the day-to-day, as well as long term operational aspects of the practice group, improving and simplifying operations processes to ensure efficiency and smooth functioning of all administrative and support functions.
  • Strategic planning: working closely with the Practice Group’s Managing Partner to develop and implement strategic plans and manage growth. Working with administrative heads in other practice groups to collaborate on larger firm priorities.
  • Technology: oversee Operations Administrator to adopt, improve, and utilize technology and software within the firm to streamline legal processes, improve efficiency, and enhance client service.
  • Facilities Management/Vendor Relations: oversee the Practice Group’s upcoming move to a new physical location. Oversee Operations Administrator in regard to relations with landlord and vendors.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES:

  • Business Acumen: Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the business functions of a law firm, including finance, accounting, Human Resources, team dynamics and operational analysis.
  • Discernment: Excellent judgment, self-reliance, and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Human Resources and Benefits: Competency demonstrated in hiring, onboarding, and employee performance, with an understanding of what the practice/team needs.
  • Managerial Skills: Understands how to relate well to others, delegate tasks, articulate goals and manage actions. Exhibits managerial courage, provides direct and respectful feedback, and is not afraid to take necessary action.
  • Analytical Skills: Can translate analysis and data into actionable plans, delivering strategic and tactical results.
  • Ethics: Models our practice ethics and values and encourages the same from those they are managing.
  • Confidentiality: Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations, using diplomacy and discretion.
  • Communication: Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with MP, PGLs, timekeepers, and staff.

QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in a law practice, with a record of achievement and increasing responsibility.
  • Strong experience with office productivity software (MS Office), especially Microsoft Excel for data analysis, performance modeling, and reporting.
  • Previous exposure and demonstrated experience with creating systems and processes is a must.
  • Business line management experience, with an emphasis on financial performance and working with high-performing professionals.
  • Direct experience in a law firm or professional services environment strongly preferred.
