What You'll Be Doing
This position involves performing skilled maintenance, repair and improvements to the water distribution and wastewater collection systems for the Department of Utilities. Work involves participating in the detection and repair of water/sewer line leaks, and maintenance of other water/sewer system facilities grounds, and equipment. Work is subject to environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration and working in hazardous conditions, (such as confined spaces, ditches, and traffic areas). Employees may be assigned tasks of a higher level of classification to gain experience and training in preparation for advancement.

Trainee Requirements:
$52,00-$96,200 DOQ

  • HS/GED;
  • Minimum three (3) months to one (1) year of basic experience with utility construction system installation or maintenance, or equivalent combination of experience and education;
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with tanker endorsement within 12 months of hire;
  • Ability to obtain VDOT Flagging Certification and CPR/First Aid Certification within 12 months of hire.
Technician Requirements:
$53,000-$98,050 DOQ

  • HS/GED;
  • Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of specific utility maintenance or installation experience including: assisting with difficult utility repairs or installations of large water and sewer mains, operation and familiar with the variety of tools used in this field to include, equipment and appropriate vehicles and knowledge of utility locating of underground utilities;
  • Knowledge in MS Suite applications and computer program applications appropriate to the position;
  • VDOT Basic Work Zone Certificate or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment;
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and safe driving record. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B, with ability to obtain Class A with tanker endorsement within 12 months of hire.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire;
  • Ability to assist with emergencies repairs on an "on call" basis; and training/ability to work in confined spaces.
Preferred Qualifications

Trainee Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one (1) to two (2) plus years of specific utility system maintenance experience; heavy construction equipment experience.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.
Technician Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum of five (5) plus years of utility system repairs.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.
