Job Description

Job Description

Are you an emerging theater artist who wants to join a team of theater makers and help groups make original, autobiographical plays? Bring your energy and sense of adventure to the Community Programs fellowship at Arena Stage! As the Community Programs Fellow, you will receive hands-on training in devising (creating) theater with middle and high school students and adults in order to start important conversations in their communities. You will learn the theater-making process used in the internationally recognized Voices of Now program, which produces highly choreographed ensemble theater pieces. You will also have the opportunity to assist on additional community programming, which may include storybook workshops for pre-school students or professional development workshops for teachers.

Arena Stage will provide the fellow with opportunities to develop skills in:

  • Devising (creating) original theater with groups
  • Using theater as a tool for dialogue and community discussions
  • Creating scripts and directing/choreographing in the Voices of Now program style
  • Lesson planning and co-teaching
  • General administrative support

We are seeking an individual with experience and enthusiasm for working with young people. We value flexibility, generosity, patience and joyfully tackling challenges as a team. The position requires working in a variety of spaces (office, classroom, rehearsal hall, stage) and creating theater with people of all ages and backgrounds. The candidate should have experience making or performing theater as well as experience working with students. A degree in theater or theater education is not required. The candidate should be comfortable writing individually and collaboratively.

Additional Expectations: Occasional school visits and special events will take place that take place outside of regular office hours. One evening rehearsal may be required per week. The candidate should be available for evening rehearsals and performances during the Voices of Now festival.

You might be interested in this fellowship if you want to pursue a career in theater education, directing, devising or community outreach.
