INTRODUCTION

Under the supervision of the Medical Director, the Endocrinologist is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of endocrinological diseases, education and counseling, and continued comprehensive health care of Unity Health Care patients, as appropriate. By the very nature of the profession, the level of assignment will call for a maximum degree of knowledge, professional judgment and ingenuity.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Serves as a referral source for Unity patients for the diagnosis and management of patients with endocrinological disorders (E.g., diabetes)
  • Assists with the development of a population health approach to managing Unity’s approximately 10,000 diabetes patients and lead multi-disciplinary team
  • Conducts physical examinations and evaluations as appropriate.
  • Determines tests needed, and orders and interprets clinical and laboratory results.
  • Makes diagnoses and prescribes therapeutic measures to include:

a. Medication;

b. Nursing Needs;

c. Counseling;

d. Nutritional Needs, etc.

  • Provides consultation to primary care providers in the practice around best practices for diabetes management
  • Encourages personal health maintenance with preventive aspects of medicine, through health counseling.
  • Assists patients along with the care team to obtain needed therapeutics and devices for the care of diabetes.
  • Performs other medically related services as required.
  • Aids in the teaching of residents and medical students.
  • Participates in continuing education and in-service programs including conferences relating to patient care;
  • Serves as a member of the Quality Improvement Committee or other committees as needed.

WORKS CLOSELY WITH

Medical Director, Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurses, Medical Assistants, Dentists, and other Health Care Providers and specialists, Unity Health Care patients, other Washington Area Health Care Agencies and Hospitals as appropriate and required, Medical Records Units and Staff, other members of Unity Health Care management and staff as appropriate, Washington area laboratories as required, and others as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an accredited school of medicine.
  • Completion of an Endocrinology fellowship
  • Must have a current license to practice in the District of Columbia.
  • Board eligible or board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and/or American Boards in Endocrinology
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be willing to accept "on call" duties on a regular rotation.
  • Must have a current CDS and DEA number.

organizational relationships that may be a part of the work of this individual.

Some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items such as books and paper Is required.

The position works involves everyday risk and discomforts, which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meetings, training rooms, and other UHC health Care Sites. The work area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated.

The incumbent must be able to balance the needs of diverse constituencies on a daily basis.

RISKS

The position involves everyday risk and discomforts, which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meetings, training rooms, and other UHC health Care Sites. The work area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated. The position requires contact with staff at all levels throughout the organization. There are also external organization relationships that may be a part of the work of this individual. All medical services shall be provided according to medically accepted community standards of care. The employee shall provide evidence of a recent (within the past twelve (12) months) health assessment that includes a PPD and/or chest x-ray results.
