Job Title: Laboratory Assistant I

Department: Laboratory

Reports To: PSC Supervisor

Location: New Ithaca Mall location!

Job Summary: PSC Laboratory Assistant I role is to float between multiple Patient Service Centers and support the need of the PSC team. In addition to adult and pediatric Phlebotomy, daily tasks will include, centrifuging, aliquoting and stabilizing patient specimens for transport via courier to the main campus lab or via the pneumatic tube system. Accurately register patients, insurance verification and verifying all patient demographics.

Job Responsibilities include:

  1. Performs proper venipuncture and post care of phlebotomy site along with labeling each specimen with 2 forms of ID with zero labeling errors.
  2. Perform registration and requisitioning and proper use of Meditech, Accureg and Cayuga connect. Participates in quality assurance and maintains inter and intra departmental work flow.
  3. Helps minimize butterfly usage throughout the PSC"s, maintains professional knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
  4. Stabilize and batch all specimens in a timely manner for courier pick up and or be able to send through the tube system properly.
  5. Maintains adequate inventory and is proficient in ordering supplies.
  6. Maintains all checklists and is able to trouble shoot when temperatures are out of range and assist with daily, weekly and monthly checklist completion.
  7. Maintain a compliant environment, including adherence to all lab and hospital procedures, HIPPAA standards and safety guidelines.
  8. Communicates in a positive and respectful manner with patients and coworkers.
  9. Infections control, proper screening of all patients, maintains hourly cleaning of all patient areas and draw rooms after completion of lab services.
  10. Is flexible and willing to make changes for the benefit of the team

Physical Demands: May require light lifting (up to 10 Lbs.) and carrying supplies. Repetitive use of hands (e.g. computer keyboard usage), sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time is often necessary.

Education/Experience:

Required: High school diploma or equivalent

External: Vocational phlebotomy (or related) course/program, or 1 year working phlebotomy experience.

Internal: Completion of phlebotomy career-ladder program.

Additional Qualifications: Good written and oral communication skills preferred. Require ability to prioritize work manage and adjust changes in work volumes. Problem solving ability and attention to detail is preferred.
