Position Overview
The Long-Term Substitute is responsible for providing classroom coverage for any teacher who is absent for a period of time. The long-term substitute works the regular hours of the absent classroom teacher during his/her absence. The tour of duty for this position is located inside of a juvenile detention center.
Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Teaches content and skills in subject area utilizing curriculum designated by Maya Angelou Schools and other appropriate learning activities
- Implements lesson plans provided by the absent teacher or Assistant Principal
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment
- Communicates with administration and colleagues about classroom challenges
- Supervises students at all times during classes
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
- Administers testing in accordance with division testing practices
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education or subject field (required)
- Experience working with incarcerated or opportunity youth (preferred)
- Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies

The Youth Services Center (YSC) is the District of Columbia’s detention center for male and female youth, responsible for the care and custody of young people placed in secure detention by court order from the DC Superior Court Family Court Division.
