The Public Works Department: Taking good care of city facilities, streets, drinking water, recycled water, the wastewater system, traffic, engineering, construction, and environmental management are some of the ways the City of Carlsbad maintains a quality community. The Position: Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of public works maintenance tasks, including operating light equipment and moderate heavy power-driven equipment, and other duties associated with the department's work activities.

The department will consider hiring at the Maintenance Worker I level or the Street Maintenance Worker II level.

The Maintenance Worker I is the entry-level class in the maintenance worker series and normally performs a variety of unskilled and semiskilled maintenance tasks - although trucks and other motorized equipment may be operated by a Maintenance Worker I, the equipment is used on a training basis for tasks which are repetitious in nature. Under this training concept, Maintenance Worker I can expect to advance to the Street Maintenance Worker II level by demonstrating the required competencies and obtaining their Class A California Driver's License within the first year of employment.

The Street Maintenance Worker II is the journey level in the maintenance worker series. Positions assigned to this class are expected to perform semi-skilled and skilled public works maintenance activities with greater independence. They will also be required to operate light and moderately heavy power-driven equipment on a continuous basis.

As a condition of employment, the Street Maintenance Worker II must submit to random drug testing as required by the Department of Transportation and City of Carlsbad regulations and guidelines.

Employees may be required to perform stand by work and are considered emergency service workers.

The Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate is a self-starting, independent individual capable of working in a team-oriented environment. The Public Works Department is looking for a candidate that has a desire to learn a variety of maintenance tasks and has the interest in long-term professional development. The successful candidate will have the ability to perform skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area of work assigned; perform heavy manual tasks; work safely and adhere to established safety principles and practices; communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; work effectively in the absence of close supervision; operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner; understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Salary Range:
Maintenance Worker I: $22.31 - $27.13 Hourly
Street Maintenance Worker II: $25.38 - $30.88 Hourly

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate power-driven equipment such as skip loaders, dump trucks, water trucks, and fork lifts.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, buildings, and other public facilities.
  • Perform a variety of tasks on street cleaning, cement, patch, or lot clearing crews.
  • Break out old concrete work such as curbs, sidewalks and gutters.
  • Cut and prepare streets for patches, spread premix and oil, and rake asphalt.
  • Couple, test, and cover water and sewer lines.
  • Clean and maintain basic tools used on the job.
  • Paint traffic directional markings, such as crosswalks safety loading zones.
  • Make, install, and repair street signs.
  • Operate heavy power-driven equipment on a relief of training basis.
Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in maintenance and construction work.
  • Safe work practices.
  • Operation of power equipment, including trucks, loaders, skid steers and related tools, methods, and materials used in street construction, maintenance and repair work.

Ability to:
  • Use the hand and light power tools required in general grounds and public works maintenance work.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Operate the particular type of equipment assigned.
  • Perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work within the area of assignment.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Assist in the supervision and training of less experienced personnel.
Experience & Education

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be one year of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Maintenance Worker I.

Necessary Special Requirement:
Possession of an appropriate California Driver's License.
