Job Summary:

The National Board is pursuing an ambitious and inclusive engagement and growth agenda toward our vision of every student learning from an accomplished teacher in their classroom. To contribute to achieving that vision, the National Board is seeking a Manager for Strategic Partnerships - West Coast to manage a project that will grow National Board Certified Teachers in targeted geographies, with a focus on diversity and equity.

The initial focus of this role will be to lead day-to-day project management for the California Black Educator Initiative, a grant-funded project with the goal of attracting and supporting 900 Black educators to become Board-certified in California (concentrated in Los Angeles). The Manager will implement the project, budget, and grant implementation strategy outlined by the Director of Strategic Partnerships - West Coast. As part of that work, the Manager will support project activities, including recruiting and supporting cohorts of Black educators in their pursuit and achievement of National Board Certification, creating communities of practice and statewide networks for Black educators in California, fostering relationships with external partners, and sharing lessons learned and best practices with external stakeholders and National Board colleagues. The Manager will also work with the Director of Strategic Partnerships - West Coast to plan timelines, monitor progress toward goals, and provide guidance on pacing and cross-team connections.

The successful candidate will bring experience in supporting large-scale multi-year projects with significant budgets, engaging with multiple partners, gathering and presenting project data, and implementing grant-funded project activities successfully, particularly projects with an equity focus. The successful candidate will also be an adept relationship builder and communicator to audiences of different types.

Summary of Key Responsibilities:

Project Management

  • Develop and implement project plans in targeted geographies to increase National Board Certification candidate growth and create sustainable systems to support Black educators in California pursuing and achieving National Board Certification.
  • Bring creativity and innovation to project design and implementation, proactively addressing barriers and creating new solutions to achieve project goals.
  • Track internal and external progress toward deliverables. Review and adapt the overall project plan to meet deliverables.
  • Provide proactive, consistent communication of key project plan milestones and updates to all relevant stakeholders, both internal and external.

Stakeholder Management and Collaboration

  • Engage key partners and stakeholders, including Black educators, district leaders, community leaders, research partners, and external contractors to implement assigned projects. 
  • Collaborate with the broader Advocacy and Communication team and other colleagues across the National Board to leverage internal resources that will support the successful implementation of assigned projects; for example, working with the communications subteam to identify opportunities for project participants to be highlighted in local media and within the organization’s storytelling work.
  • Represent the organization at external events and with external stakeholders, particularly those involved in assigned projects. 
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion of all stakeholders, staff, and participants. 
  • Identify best practices and high-leverage strategies that can be adapted and spread to other geographies and contexts. 

Grant and Budget Management

  • Monitor and reconcile a multi-million dollar grant budget, ensuring the maximal use of resources in a timely manner against project objectives.
  • Facilitate a process by which the team can make monthly spending projections, invoice for reimbursement, and re-forecast spending on a regular basis.
  • Oversee and ensure efficiency of invoice processing so that payments are approved and submitted to the National Board’s Finance division in a timely manner.
  • Partner with the National Board’s Finance team to make and monitor accurate projections about the pace of grant spending.
  • Coordinate and collect data for annual reporting to funders, including budget reports, outcome measurements, and success stories.
  • Collaborate with and deploy shared practices from other National Board project / grant managers.

Summary of Experience:

  • Requires 5-7  years of experience in nonprofit or education organizations and a Bachelor’s degree.
  • PMP® certification (or similar project or grant management credential) preferred but not required.
  • PreK-12 teaching experience is preferred but not required. National Board Certification is preferred but not required.
  • Requires extensive experience supporting large-scale grant-funded projects with multiple stakeholders and large budgets.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills, including the proven ability to build relationships with internal colleagues and with external stakeholders.
  • Track record of partnership and impact on DEI issues in education, especially for educators of color.

Required Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Experience with and commitment to continuous improvement. 
  • Experience managing multiple interconnected projects. You are comfortable developing timelines and scoping deliverables. Bonus if you have experience doing this with a mix of internal and external teams.
  • Experience managing a complex, changing budget with rigorous criteria from the funder. You are comfortable with the language of finance and accounting and have conducted analytics to identify how resources may be deployed more efficiently.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with established deadlines. 
  • Fluent with project and grant management tools (i.e., MS Excel, Google Drive, SmartSheet) and driving improvements with internal tools and processes.
  • Excellent relationship management and communication skills, including the ability to produce quality written materials, as well as revise and edit materials written by others.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission and goals of the National Board.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, remote-work environment. 
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment for all team members.

  • The National Board's office is located in Arlington, VA, however, the National Board staff operates in a virtual first office policy in response to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic and impact on our lives. Due to the needs of this project, preferential consideration will be given to candidates in California. However all applicants in the United States are welcome to apply.
  • Occasional in-person event support in California is a requirement for this role.
