Position Title: SEEK Lead Mentor

Department: Programs SEEK

Reports To: Site Director/ Director of Programs

Location: Baker Ripley House, 4410 Navigation Blvd, Houston, TX 77011

SALARY - $2800 (1 week of training + 3 program weeks)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) mentors are fundamental to the program. NSBE is seeking highly motivated individuals to join NSBE’S SEEK team as a Lead Mentor. Lead Mentors are responsible for driving a fun and engaging engineering curriculum, guiding and mentoring SEEK participants and SEEK mentors, fostering an environment that encourages leadership development and manage classrooms of 20-30 students while providing introductory lessons to STEM concepts. SEEK lead mentors serve as role models for students through academic and ethical leadership in the classroom, which strongly aligns with the Core Values of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Additionally, SEEK lead mentors work to embody the NSBE mission in their everyday engagement with students, while executing the goals of the program. This role will report under the Site Director and NSBE WHQ Staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Training Requirements:

  • Participate in Mentor Training Week prior to the start of the program.
  • Complete all pre-training materials prior to the start of the program.

Mentor Operations:

  • Teach general math and science concepts to students at an appropriate age level.
  • Be the lead teacher in at least one concept provided by the given curriculum.
  • Support other mentors during their teaching time.
  • Prepare students for competitions, including presentation (written, physical, oral) and physical competition.
  • Work with other mentors in all aspects of classroom management and teaching.
  • Organize and facilitate free time activities.
  • Manage student behavior. Employ discipline techniques if necessary (instruction will be provided during training sessions).
  • Actively participate in ALL group meetings with your other classroom mentors
  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment that encourages collaboration, critical thinkin, and effective communication among SEEK participants.
  • Provide hands-on support, troubleshooting, and guidance throughout projects.
  • Assist in organizing and coordinating camp logistics, ensuring the smooth execution of activities and projects.
  • Support administrative tasks such as tracking progress, documenting achievements, and providing feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Prioritize the safety and well-being of participants by ensuring adherence to safety guidelines and addressing any concerns promptly.
  • Create a supportive and respectful atmosphere that promotes positive interactions among participants.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Age 18 or older
  • Agree to have a criminal background check performed (results must be successful).
  • Currently pursuing or have successfully earned an undergraduate degree (degree in STEM or education field preferred).
  • Active, paid NSBE member preferred.
  • Knowledge and supportive of NSBE mission
  • Knowledge of the philosophies and objectives of SEEK program.
  • Previous experience in mentoring or teaching, preferably in an engineering or STEM-related setting is a PLUS.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and inspire others is desirable.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to connect with diverse set of students.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs and Google Drive
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of internal and external partners.
  • CPR/First Aid Certified is preferred.
  • Ability to supervise a group of children of various ages preferred.
  • Ability to lead and manage a group of mentors preferred.

Organizational Skills: Can coordinate schedules, activities, and resources efficiently; Oversees the logistics of daily operations and ensures that all planned events run smoothly.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic knowledge of Internet Software, Spreadsheet Software (i.e. Excel), Project Management Software and Word Processing Software (i.e. Word)

Teamwork and Collaboration: Leading a team of counselors requires the ability to foster a collaborative and supportive atmosphere. Lead Mentors encourage teamwork, promote positive relationships among staff, and facilitate effective communication to ensure everyone is working together harmoniously for the benefit of the students.
