Job Summary:

A General Metal Fabricator in manufacturing buildings is a highly skilled role within the construction and industrial industry. This role involves working with different metals to create the structural elements used in building construction. Production revolves around customer orders, so it is imperative that we cross train. Below are the job duties you may be asked to perform as a General Metal Fabricator.


Baseboards

  • Baseboard installers must accurately measure and cut the baseboard trims to fit them along the floors of the room. This involves using tools like measuring tapes and miter saws for precision.
  • Installers attach baseboards to the walls using a range of techniques, which can include adhesives, nails, or screws. They need to be adept at using manual and power tools, including hammers, nail guns, drills, and more.
  • To ensure a sealed and finished look, baseboard installers apply caulking along the top edge of the installed baseboard where it meets the wall. For this, they use a caulk gun and are skilled at applying caulk neatly and evenly.
  • It's vital that baseboard installers can identify any problems with existing baseboards, such as water damage, warping, or detachment. The installer should repair these issues before starting the new installation.
  • The installer follows all relevant safety guidelines and protocols during all stages of their work. They should be comfortable working in various conditions, including cramped or uncomfortable spaces.
  • Baseboard installers often apply finish touches such as painting or staining the baseboards.

Brazing

  • Cuts, bends, and organizes tubing.
  • Must be able to read technical documents and blueprints to understand the layout and desired outcome.
  • Measures, marks, cuts, and bends tubing to be used in buildings.
  • Uses heavy machinery to bend steel bars.
  • Cuts tubing to required lengths using band saws.
  • Wears appropriate protective gear and ensures safety procedures are followed.
  • Covering
  • Measuring and cutting siding and covering materials to fit walls and corners, or changes in building materials and structure.
  • Fastening siding and weatherboards, using nails, screws, or other fasteners. They need to ensure that these are straight and secure.
  • Sealing areas with plastic sheeting and tape to ensure dust and dirt containment and protecting adjacent surfaces during installation of siding and windows.
  • Applying weather-stripping and sealing around windows to ensure insulation and protect structures from weather damage.
  • Inspecting surfaces and structures for safety or repairs, suggesting any necessary corrective actions.
  • Understanding and complying with applicable building codes, safety regulations, and guidelines.
  • Communicating with supervisors and peers using spoken or written words to convey information effectively and ensure project completion.

Door Builder / Door and Window Installer

  • Reading and interpreting work orders, specifications, and blueprints to understand project requirements.
  • Aligning and fitting hardware such as locks, handles, and hinges.
  • Ensuring measurements are accurate for the fitting of the window or door.
  • Using hand and power tools to cut and shape framework for windows and doors.
  • Caulking and sealing windows and doors to prevent water and air leaks.
  • Inspect and adjust newly installed doors and windows to ensure they operate properly.
  • Maintaining a safe working environment by cleaning and organizing the job site before and after the installation process.
  • Floors
  • Installing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of flooring materials.
  • Reading and interpreting floor plans, blueprints, and other architectural diagrams to understand the layout and characteristics of a space.
  • Measuring the installation area and cutting material to the correct size.
  • Using various tools and equipment to properly install flooring, including carpet stretchers, knee kickers, and heat seamers for carpet installation; tile spacers, tile cutters, and grout for tile installation; or power saws, nail guns, and sanders for hardwood or laminate installation.
  • Inspect final product to ensure it is defect-free and meets customer satisfaction.
  • Complying with safety regulations and maintaining a clean work area.

Frame Bender

  • Studies specifications in blueprints, sketches, or building plans to prepare a project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
  • Shapes or cuts materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saw.
  • Assembles and fastens materials to make framework using hand tools and wood screws, nails.
  • Builds or repairs doors, frameworks, floors, or other wooden fixtures used in buildings, using woodworking machines, carpenter's hand tools, or power tools.
  • Erects framework for structures.
  • Installs structures or fixtures, such as windows, and door frames using carpenter's hand or power tools.
  • Verifies trueness of structure carpenter's level.
  • Equally important are adherence to safety protocols and maintaining a clean workspace.

Trim

  • Installing and repairing molding and trim found on windows, doors, baseboards, mantels, and other ornamental pieces.
  • Demonstrating a good understanding of measurements and precision to ensure a seamless and aesthetic finish.
  • Reading, interpreting, and following complex blueprints and building plans.
  • Utilizing a variety of hand and power tools, such as squares, rules, and chisel.
  • Frequently working with materials such as wood, vinyl, fiberglass, and metal.
  • Fitting and installing window frames, interior and exterior trim using a carpenter's level.
  • Ensuring work environments are clean and safe.
  • Finishing surfaces of woodwork buildings, using paint and hand tools.
  • Careful verification of trueness of structures with a carpenter's level.
