Salary:

Our company is in need of an energetic supportive team member with experience in decorating cakes and deserts.  If you are interested in joining our team and hold 2+ years experience working in a bakery or related feild with the skills for decorating cakes and deserts, we look forward to reviewing your application!


The primary role of our Cake Decorators are to design and decorate cakes as requested by customers for special occasions, maintain and operate the Deli/Bakery Department in an efficient manner within company policy, and to ensure that the shift and products contribute to the financial best interests of the store.

 

SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Consulting with customers to discuss desired cake designs and cake decorating ideas for specialty cakes;
  2. Designing and decorating cakes according to customers' specifications.
  3. Decorating regular bakery items according to established bakery standards.
  4. Assisting baking staff with the production of standard bakery items.
  5. Producing different kinds of icing, frosting, and cake fillings based on cake type and customer preferences.
  6. Ensuring that the display refrigerators are cleaned, polished, and fully stocked with cakes, pastries, and desserts.
  7. Taking inventory of baking and decorating supplies and ordering new stock as required.
  8. Cleaning and sanitizing all work areas and ovens as well as baking and decorating equipment.
  9. Observe all store rules and company policies;
  10. Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance at all times and observe company dress regulations;
  11. Must wear an approved hat or hair net;
  12. Observe shift operating hours at all times as scheduled or assigned by store manager;
  13. Adhere to all local, state and federal health and civil code regulations;
  14. Assist in receiving and unloading of merchandise; check and verify grocery receiving to ensure that items listed on vendor invoices are all delivered; check products for quality, count, and condition;
  15. Take stock to storage or shelf areas;
  16. Control freshness by coding all products and pulling out-of-code merchandise daily;
  17. Reduce out-of-code merchandise daily for quick sale to maintain department's image for the highest quality and freshness;
  18. Wrap, package and price all products accurately and legibly in accordance with established department procedures and guidelines;
  19. Answer telephones and take special orders;
  20. Keep manager or other designated personnel of low inventory conditions or excessive spoilage problems;
  21. Handle damaged and spoiled products according to company policy and assist in controlling the level of damaged goods;
  22. Comply with safety policies and procedures; read all Safety Committee bulletins;
  23. Assist in training associates when assigned;
  24. Control excessive uses of utilities and water and observe sound conservation practices;
  25. Perform other duties and assignments as directed;
  26. Greet all customers and provide them with prompt and courteous service or assistance.
  27. To prepare/organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receipt of merchandise, unload trucks, verify the merchandise against the invoice, inspect the delivery for shortages/damage and quality, sort cases for stocking or product preparation and code date the product.
  28. To clean department floors, mirrors, case, tables, cooler, freezer, production equipment, product preparation area, and shelves. Safely use cleaning equipment and chemicals.
  29. To perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by supervisors and managers, substituting for absent workers and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to customers during peak periods of business.
  30. To understand the operation, safety requirements and restraints of a baler, case cutter, pallet jack, intercom, pricing gun, yogurt machine, slicer, scales, wrapper, cash register, steam table, fryer, stove, smoker (must be 18 years or older to operate the pallet jack, baler, smoker, slicer, steam table and fryer and other equipment).
  31. To count and record individual items of merchandise for inventory.
  32. To change department pricing as directed and manually price mark/label merchandise without an UPC code.
  33. To evaluate product quality and move damaged/unsalable and "returnable" products from the case to the preparation area, re-processing the merchandise into a saleable form or marking the product down in price.
  34. To prepare/package/label product:
    1. Sandwiches, pizza, salads, sliced meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, vegetables, samples, plate dinners and fried foods.
    2. Sliced fruits and vegetables.
  35. To fill/stock: salad bar, coffee, beverage and ice cream/yogurt machine, display cases, and counter.


QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:

  1. Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and ability to count.
  2. Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/employees concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment.
  3. A stable work and educational history.
  4. The ability to read and write English. Able to read instructions, case/product labels, temperature gauges, warehouse order codes, numbers, reports, printed paper invoices and order forms.
  5. Make judgments concerning the cutting and trimming of fresh meat, placement of merchandise on the shelf/display (spatial relationship), case opening procedures, extent of unsalable product damage, conversation with customers, selling of product, display of product, use of packaging materials for product, quality of product for display and ordering of processed items.
  6. Able to open cases and stock so that products will not be damaged.
  7. Able to clearly price mark/label products for customers and cashiers.
  8. Good interpersonal communications.
  9. 2 or more years experience in decorating cakes, deserts, etc.


PREFERRED:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Prior experience or training in a related job.
  3. Prior experience operating a baler, case cutter, cleaning/sanitation equipment, pallet jack, pricing gun, grinder, tenderizer, saw, knife, slicer, scales, wrapper, smoker, (must be 18 years or older to operate the pallet jack, forklift, baler, grinder, smoker, tenderizer, saw and slicer).

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; stand; and use the hands to handle, finger, or feel objects, tools or controls;
  2. The employee must frequently walk, talk or hear, and reach with the hands and arms; occasionally, the employee must crouch or kneel;
  3. The employee must occasionally exert or lift up to 50 pounds carrying boxes of records and forms and frequently exert or lift negligible amounts of weight;
  4. Be able to sweep and mop floors and lift and carry out trash containers to be emptied in an outside bin;
  5. Have sufficient physical mobility or agility to be able to respond quickly to fire or other emergencies such as cleanup requests due to accidental spills or breakage of glass;
  6. Be able to stock coolers and shelves and endure working under temperature extremes in refrigerated storage areas and near/around heated ovens;
  7. Be able to work in an environment containing bakery ingredients including finely powdered substances such as flour and spices without adverse or negative allergic consequences that affect performance;
  8. Be able to tolerate moderate amounts of dust and chemical fumes from common household cleaning agents such as ammonia during routine housekeeping duties;
  9. Have sufficient memory retention skills to memorize weekly specials and customer requests/orders.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment includes occasional exposure to refrigerated frozen food storage areas with temperatures as low as 20 degrees (Fahrenheit) below zero and occasional exposure to heated ovens and high temperatures;
