REPORTS TO:  ALAMOSA COUNTY SHERIFF

FLSA STATUS:  NON-EXEMPT

SALARY GRADE:  $44,000-$50,000 DOE

JOB SUMMARY:  Ensures compliance with all relevant safety standards.  Responsible for building maintenance, repairs for furnaces, air conditioners, boilers, and any equipment needed for building operation.  Works directly with Sheriff’s Office Detention Administrator or Sheriff on maintenance projects and custodial tasks at the jail and Sheriff’s offices.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Meet and/or communicate with ACSO Command Staff to inform Command Staff on all projects at the Sheriff’s Office and Jail when working independently.
  • Ensure that all ACSO equipment remains in good working condition.
  • Maintains the ACSO grounds to include removing weeds, raking and disposing of leaves and refuse as needed, trash pick-up and removal from building offices and surrounding outside grounds, snow removal including shoveling, plowing, snow blowing and operating/driving snow removal equipment.
  • Performs maintenance functions within the entire Sheriff’s building to include painting, plumbing, and some electrical, structural repairs to masonry, woodwork, and furnishings of building, as needed.
  • Maintains heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment including filter changes and calibrations for jail.
  • Full time 24-hour/on call coverage for maintenance and repair issues within the jail.
  • Ability to work schedule to meet all the obligations of the position.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team.
  • Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) in English and to interact appropriately with all staff.
  • Ability to follow the policies and procedures outlined in the ACSO Policies and Procedures Handbook.

   KNOWLEDGE:

  • Alamosa County and Sheriff’s Departmental Policies and Procedures
  • Program planning for the ACSO Building in association with the Sheriff.
  • Provide guidance to co-workers and detention inmate workers.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Knowledge of basic repairs for all equipment in the ACSO facility.

  • Ensures the security of the Sheriff’s offices and Jail in adopting policies and procedures for securing all doors activating security lighting systems, electronic security lock systems.  Assures readiness and proper functioning of all safety equipment including cameras, audio, and visual alarms, fire alarm systems, sprinklers and fire extinguishers.
  • Executes preventative maintenance programs for machines and equipment as outlined by the Sheriff.
  • Reports on the conditions of the ACSO facilities and recommends needed changes or repairs to the Sheriff and/or Command Staff.
  • Be familiar with the annual budget for building and grounds necessary for continued maintenance.  Work with the Sheriff/Command Staff in monitoring expenditures to insure the proper and efficient management of funds.
  • Monitors and orders supplies, materials, tools, and equipment to maintain acceptable inventory levels within the Detention Center and the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Custodial duties at the Jail and Sheriff’s Offices including dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and restroom cleaning.  Other specific duties to include checking and cleaning grease traps, septic/debris tanks, kitchen hoods, and kitchen and laundry equipment as well as kitchen floor maintenance.
  • Manage work orders and appointments with security, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC vendors when repairs exceed knowledge and expertise in regards to code, safety and licenses.  Manage any warranty work for kiosk, kitchen, laundry, and security equipment at the Sheriff’s office and Detention Center.
  • Be trained and become proficient on the use of Detention Center hardware, tools, and equipment.   Work with trained Detention Deputies on safety measures when working in jail facilities among inmate to ensure safety of employee, detention officers, and inmates.  Be trained on tool inventory inside a detention center and train outside contractors and other employees about tool inventory and safety.
  • Train and supervise Detention Trustees for help in custodial and interior maintenance projects. 
  • Practice self-protection against communicable diseases when in the Detention Center and working with septic systems or possible unsanitary conditions.
  • Adheres to County and Sheriff’s Office Departmental policies and safety regulations.
  • Follow all safety practices and attend or conduct safety meetings.
  • Analyzes and resolve work problems.
  • Confer with other supervisors to coordinate activities of individual departments.
  • Assist in moving furniture or providing other assistance to individual departments as needed.
  • Ability to fill in for the Building & Grounds Department when requested by the Building & Grounds Department via the Sheriff.
  • Provide kitchen maintenance, floors, grease traps, light fixtures, door knobs
  • Provide laundry maintenance, cleaning supplies.
  • Provide generator maintenance and up keep.
  • Provide tile floor maintenance.
  • Assist with fleet maintenance

EDUCATION:​​​​​​​

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Two (2) to five (5) years of experience in building maintenance or relative field.
  • Colorado Driver’s License required.
  • Electrical license preferred.
  • Plumbing Certification preferred.
  • HVAC Certification preferred.
