Director of Engineering
Packaging Machines / Assembly Machines / Industrial Machinery


Filamatic is seeking a Director of Engineering with outstanding leadership, managerial and machine design skills. Our company designs and manufactures liquid filling machinery systems for the biotech, diagnostic, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and cannabis industries. Our liquid packaging lines typically include bottle unscramblers, liquid fillers, pluggers, cappers, labelers, coders, and inspection systems. Our machines are capable of dispensing from microliters to gallons at speeds up to 250 containers per minute.

We are poised for significant growth and need an engineering department leader to help take advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead.

The Director of Engineering will supervise our team of mechanical, electrical, software and mechatronic engineers. The Director of Engineering will be responsible for the design of standard machines, customized machines, retrofit / upgraded machines, and prototype machines (R&D). The prototype machines are designed and built in the R&D Department, which reports to the Director of Engineering. The Director of Engineering reports to our President / CEO.

Job Responsibilities


  • Work with the Sales & Marketing team to ensure that our products offer a superior value proposition to our customers taking into consideration cost and performance.
  • Ensure that project engineering designs are released on schedule, are error free, and meet budget expectations.
  • Standardize and value-engineer our product line to minimize cost.
  • Utilize state of the art machine design technology.
  • Supervise the R&D Department that designs, constructs and debugs prototype equipment.
  • Fully utilize the Company’s information technology (IT) systems including CAD (Solidworks and Autocad), Microsoft Projects (project management software) and ERP software to improve the operating efficiency of the department.
  • Provide comprehensive machine instruction manuals.
  • Design machines that are user friendly and are safe.
  • Work with the manufacturing and final assembly departments to debug machines.
  • Work with technical service department to help resolve customer operational issues.
  • Meet department budgets and metrics.
  • Supervisor of the test lab to help ensure that machine designs will meet customer requirements.
  • Design standard and custom machines that meet customer performance requirements.
  • Interface with customers, sales, and application engineers to ensure customer specifications are met.
  • Evaluate, investigate, and incorporate new technology into product line.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and critique designs created by staff members.
  • Set department standards and support continuous improvement of department.
  • Standardize on designs, components, methodologies, drawing standards, and documentation.
  • Ability to prove out concepts by building prototypes and testing before finalizing the design.


Qualifications


  • BS in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or mechatronics engineering.
  • MBA preferred
  • 5-10 years’ experience managing the design of complex, automated, multifunctional packaging machinery, assembly machinery, industrial machinery, or capital equipment.
  • Experience designing machines within budget, on time, and that meet or exceed customer specifications on a timely basis, minimizing need for rework.
  • Experience working with CAD (Solidworks, Autocad).
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Product Lifecyle Management (PLM) software.
  • Experience with Microsoft Projects or similar project management software.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Experience organizing and staffing a department that produces designs that (1) meet or exceed customer requirements, (2) are released on time, (3) are within design budget, (4) meet total machine cost budgeted.
  • Ability to hire, motivate and mentor subordinates to meet department and corporate goals.
  • Knowledgeable about design for manufacturing principles.
  • Knowledgeable about machine shop and machine assembly operations.
  • Ability to work on a collaborative basis with Directors and Managers.
  • Be an empathetic team-player.
  • Experience with designing packaging or assembly machinery which incorporate robotics and other state of the art automation.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of Drafting Standards and Tolerancing.
  • Experience integrating complimentary machinery from other 3rd party suppliers.
