Job Title: Technical Writer/Editor III

Job Summary:

The purpose of this position is to provide scientific technical writing, editing, speech writing, and general communications management support to the Directorate for Engineering (ENG) at the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). Working for the EDU/OAD and EDU/EES teams at the NSF involves shaping the future of STEM education, fostering innovation, and advancing scientific discovery to inspire the next generation of thinkers and problem solvers.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Writing/editing articles, white papers, fact sheets, blogs, web content, and other publications related to science topics of interest to stakeholders, translating complicated scientific concepts and ideas into clear language
  • Drafting speeches, congressional testimony, talking points, and presentations as needed for Engineering leadership related to science and engineering topics of interest to various stakeholders from Congress to scientific associations, professional societies, academia and international organization
    • This requires synthesizing information from a variety of internal and external sources to produce all manner of written, visual, and audio materials
  • Developing communications plans, engagement strategies, and messaging to communicate the agency's mission and activities
  • Preparing communications products that articulate, interpret, and explain important and complex Engineering programs and research findings
  • Transforming complex and detailed written communications and documents into accessible content using plain language standards to engage non-technical and non-scientific audiences
  • Communicating with internal and external stakeholders to develop engaging, targeted communications for a wide variety of audiences, including research communities, advisory boards, and the general public
  • Collaborating effectively with science and engineering experts, executives, and administrative staff

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor of science in engineering
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance
  • 6+ years of applicable professional experience
  • Strong writing, editing, and speech writing background
  • Ability to:
    • Provide expert-level review, edit, and proofreading of various types of documents
    • Ensure compliance with the appropriate style guide and other requirements
    • Conduct research of required information
    • Write, draft, edit, format documents including reports, articles, briefings, studies, instructions, white papers, slides, handouts/factsheets, and work plans
    • Prepare and compile documents for approval and clearance

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Monday - Friday, normal business hours
  • Work to be performed remotely
  • The potential for occasional travel to NSF offices in Alexandria, VA
