Position Summary

The Medical Support Assistant aids in the examination and treatment of patients with diseases and injuries seeking treatment in the clinic, under clinical supervision. Collaborates with the core Clinical Team (Primary Care Provider, RN and LPN/LVN) involved in developing the patient care plan.


Core Responsibilities

  • Perform support work related to the care and treatment of Veterans to include scheduling patient appointments, tracking, reviewing, and responding to electronic orders, consults, and other elements in the electronic medical record.
  • Interviews patients, measures vital signs, such as pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height and other relevant details. Records information in patient’s electronic medical record.
  • Cleans treatment rooms, equipment and supplies using approved manufacture wipes and/or solutions.
  • Operates electrocardiograph (EKG) and other diagnostic equipment to administer routine diagnostic test and treatments, including glucometers, pulse oximeters, nebulizers, oxygen equipment, spirometry, eye exams, etc.
  • Collects lab specimens, including but not limited to urine, blood, and sputum, from patients for testing and may perform waived laboratory tests on these specimens.
  • Submits any received laboratory and radiology results to medical providers and provides private practice results to VA for scanning or scans results into patient’s medical records after the provider has reviewed.
  • Schedule clinic appointments. Specific responsibilities relative to scheduling, PCMM assignments; outpatient clinic appointment recall additions and edits and making entries into the Electronic Wait List.
  • Check patients in and/or out of the clinic, including verification or editing of patient information and insurance. Completes means test and enters results. Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Prints, prepares, and organizes patient check-in list with medication list for the following day.
  • Inputs all patients’ information into VISTA/CPRS
  • Verifies any and all clinical reminders “due” at the time of each patient visit are completed prior to check out.
  • Answers phones and timely relays messages.
  • Complies with all VA and company training requirements.
  • Assists in co-managed care collaboration with non-VA providers, and facilities.
  • Provides patient and family health education with a focus on self-management, prevention, wellness, related health issues and healthy lifestyle choices. Advises in services available through community resources.
  • Maintains confidentiality of veterans’ data and information.
  • Complies with all VA and company training requirements.
  • Inventories and orders medical/office supplies and materials.
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Must have a High School Diploma
  • Must have completed a 1-year vocational training program
  • Must be a Certified Medical Assistant
  • Must remain in good standing with the Veterans Health Administration (VA). Credentialing may be required based on the individual VA contract.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support, must be renewed periodically as specified by the AHA, and in ACLS if specified by individual VAMC contract.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Strong computer skills, including EMR experience
  • Energetic and optimistic demeanor, with exceptional customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • This is considered a safety sensitive position.
  • Annual PPD test
  • Must be compliant with federal, state, local government or contract specific vaccine mandates and/or requirements.

About the Role

This job is CONTINGENT upon contract award, client approval, completion of a favorable background investigation, and the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust / High Risk clearance.
