The Associate Editor divides their time working for Bethesda Magazine and the MoCo360 online news site.


Essential Job Functions:


For Bethesda Magazine, the essential duties of this job include, but are not limited to:


· Work with the Editor and Managing Editor to plan content for each issue of the magazine

· Assign and edit stories

· Collaborate with the art department to plan story visuals

· Plan and execute data gathering for “Top” features such as Top Doctors, Top Dentists and Top Real Estate Producers

· Plan and execute the nomination process for reader-driven features such as the Extraordinary Teen Awards and Women Who Inspire, as well as an annual short story writing contest.

· Employ print and digital reader data to inform editorial decisions


For MoCo360, the essential duties of this job include, but are not limited to:


· Work with the Editor and Reporters to develop and execute story ideas and help reporters keep track of their assigned beats

· Line edit and copy edit stories, including fact checking

· Report and write news stories on occasion

· Fill in for the Editor when they are on PTO or otherwise unavailable

· Employ digital reader data to inform editorial decisions

Requirements:

In addition to the essential functions listed above, the employee is expected to exercise honesty, integrity and respect with all clients and co-workers, maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, demonstrate a positive attitude, communicate effectively with co-workers and clients, work with accuracy, efficiency, and attention to detail, respect the work environment and keep it as environmentally friendly as possible, and exercise initiative to learn new skills and tasks and to help co-workers when possible. Reliable attendance and punctuality are also required. The employee is also expected to perform such other duties and functions as required from time to time.


The Associate Editor is required to work in the office at least three days a week and the work week for this role is Tuesday through Saturday (or another combination of days that include Saturdays).


Qualifications:

· A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism or a related field

· At least three years of experience as an editor, at least two of which involve editing a high volume of stories in a breaking news environment

· Live in the Washington, D.C., area (preferably in Montgomery County), and possess a strong commitment to local journalism and to serving the community. Knowledge of Montgomery County a plus.

· Ability to be deadline-oriented, pay scrupulous attention to detail and to demonstrate strong organizational skills

· Must work well with a team, be nimble and be able to multitask in a deadline-driven environment
