Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $2.1 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office.

N3B is a limited liability company owned by HII Nuclear Inc. and BWX Technologies, joined by our critical subcontractors Longenecker and Associates and Tech2 Solutions.

N3B brings operational discipline, proven approaches and predictable results to the Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract.

Position Location:

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position Summary

N3B engineering is seeking a Designer/Drafter to support the development and upkeep of maintenance, waste processing, and facilities drawings at N3B. While working to achieve N3B LLCC objectives, the Designer/Drafter will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner; will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):

The Designer/Drafter is responsible for:

  • Performing site checks.
  • Performing drawing checks
  • Develop and update engineering drawings and/or 3D models in support of N3B Operations
  • Manage drawing documents in a manner that ensures proper revision control
  • Performing work in accordance with the Conduct of Engineering (CoE) and applicable Federal, State, and applicable codes and standards

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):

  • Experience with both 2D and 3D computer aided design software programs such as AutoCAD and AutoCAD Inventor is required.
  • Proficient in MS Office to include MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principals, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent.
  • Understanding of engineering, design, and drafting concepts related to a mechanical, electrical, civil, etc. disciplines.
  • Knowledge of ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function.

Education and Experience Required:

Drafter Level 3:

Associate's Degree in a related discipline and 3 years of experience. 2 years of related experience can be substituted for Associate's degree. An Apprentice Certificate or graduation from Navy Nuclear Power School can be substituted for Associate's degree. Familiarity with DOE Nuclear Facilities is preferred.

Business Associations: Contacts are frequent with individuals representing other departments and/or representing outside organizations. Contacts involve obtaining or providing information or data on matters of moderate importance to the function of the department or which may be of a sensitive nature

Impact: Errors may be difficult to detect and would normally result in loss of customer business, material, or equipment to resolve.

Drafter Level 4:

Associate's Degree in a related discipline and 6 years of experience. 2 years of related experience can be substituted for Associate's degree. An Apprentice Certificate or graduation from Navy Nuclear Power School can be substituted for Associate's degree. Familiarity with DOE Nuclear Facilities is preferred.

Business Associations: Contacts are frequent with individuals representing outside organizations and/or individuals of significant importance within the company. Contacts involve planning and preparation of the communications, require skill, tact, persuasion and/or negotiation to accomplish the objectives of the communications.

Impacts: Errors are very difficult to detect and would normally require significant expenditures to resolve.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may be very little, a job is in this category when it requires a good deal of walking or standing, or when it involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. To be considered capable of performing a full or wide range of light work, you must have the ability to do substantially all of these activities. If someone can do light work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary work, unless there are additional limiting factors such as loss of fine dexterity or inability to sit for long periods of time.
