Lab Director (Tallulah, LA)

Under the direction of the Administrator and the Ancillary Department Head, the Laboratory Director is responsible for providing laboratory services to meet the needs of patients as ordered by the medical staff and performed according to the highest professional standards. The lab Director directs, supervises, and coordinates all functions and activities in the laboratory department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Meets with the Administration to discuss department objectives, budget and major purchase priorities, policies and procedures, charges for services, and other administrative matters, needs, and problems.

Meets with medical staff concerning types of tests available, results of tests, reporting, handling errors, etc. Consult with a Pathologist concerning technical matters.

Meets with nursing staff concerning requisitioning procedures, scheduling tests, and procedures, instruction for patient preparation, reporting test results, etc.

Directs, supervises, and coordinates all functions and activities in the laboratory department.

Establishes department objectives and quality of work performance to meet the highest professional standards and maintains compliance with standards for department operation established with the cooperation of the pathologist, administrators, and demanded by government regulatory agencies.

Establishes and maintains quality control of tests and procedures; reviews test findings of laboratory personnel; periodically checks validity and accuracy of test results obtained by personnel.

Develops written department policies, procedures, and design forms to be used by the department. Update procedure manuals at least annually. Determines fees to be charged for laboratory services.

Directs and supervises department personnel.

Establishes service priorities, department work routine, and workflow patterns to ensure prompt processing of requisitions, the performance of tests and procedures, and reporting test results.

Directs purchasing functions of the department keeps inventory of equipment and supplies and performs related duties.

Directs and supervises the maintenance of department records and files.

Performs and assigns proficiency surveys, and does a comparative analysis of work units.

Participates in hospital committees and in-service education programs. Is a member of the Safety Committee and Infection Control Committee.

Complies with established hospital policies and procedures and abides by established communications code.

Coordinates department functions with other hospital departments and maintains good interdepartmental and public relations.

Attends meetings such as department head meetings, staff meetings (if needed), in-service meetings, committee meetings, and PI meetings.

Keeps up-to-date in the field of laboratory services through current literature, workshops and seminars, and membership in a professional organization.

Performs duties of Medical Technologist.

Education and Requirements:

Minimum of an AAS degree, or have a Bachelor's degree in Science or Biology. Graduate of an approved course in Medical Technology.

5 years of laboratory management experience

National Certification.

Louisiana license- licensed by Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiner

Management or supervisory experience preferred or at least two years’ experience as a staff medical technologist in all areas.

General Supervisor High Complexity Testing must meet the requirements listed in

42 CFR Subpart M 493.1461-1462-1463

Must be willing to take occasional call or fill in for staff as needed.
