Summary

The School Bus Driver for Career Academy of South Bend is responsible for safely transporting students to and from our schools, internship locations and other related events. They are to make sure that the assigned bus or shuttle is in safe operating condition at all times. In some cases, these drivers are required to maintain discipline, order unruly students and prevent unauthorized persons from getting on the buses and Shuttles. They must meet established bus and shuttle schedules.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid drivers licenses with, CDL, Yellow Card, appropriate state and local school bus training, and a minimum of 2 years of experience.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Drives a school bus safely in accordance with time schedules; transporting students to and from the schools, internships, and on field trips as assigned.
  • Oversees the loading and unloading of students, releasing students to authorized individuals
  • Maintains order and proper discipline of passengers; resolving disputes, documents and reports severe disciplinary cases
  • Conducts established safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily
  • Assures maintenance of bus in safe and clean operating condition; reporting needed mechanical repairs and follows established security procedures
  • Services buses with gas, checks oil, battery and tires
  • Completes periodic mileage and other reports including passenger counts
  • Attends various meetings regarding safety, first aid and training updates as required
  • Attends driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code as it applies to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children
  • Operates a two-way radio
  • Establishes drop off and pickup order of assigned students; conferring with supervisors, schedulers, and other staff regarding transportation needs, plotting route on map, documenting route, and adjusting route for new and/or dropped students
  • Monitors students with special health problems while in bus; receiving written or oral instructions, being aware and alert to any signs of difficulty following prescribed instructions and procedures, administering first aid, and calling for emergency assistance
  • Transports and delivers personal belongings, messages and memos between parents and school staff, collects and returns students' personal property when entering and disembarking.
  • Maintains a variety of records and reports including but not limited to mileage, routing, maintenance, and time schedules
  • Attends meetings, programs, and professional training and testing as assigned
  • Maintains current required licenses and certificates
  • Notifies appropriate individuals of any delays in scheduled route
  • Assists with other routes when breakdown or other unusual circumstances occur as assigned
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

School Activities

  • CASB Bus Driver is required to attend and/or participate in such other activities as directed by the Administrator such as: faculty meetings (before or after school hours), open houses, commencement exercises, chaperone student activities, provide guidance for students, participate on faculty committees, study and help resolve school problems.

Essential Skills and Abilities

  • Able to read and interpret a map
  • Able to establish and maintain proper conduct and safety of passengers on buses and shuttles
  • Ability to accept/relate to students with a variety of exceptional needs
  • Must exercise good judgment and extreme caution while operating a buses and shuttle
  • Must be able to remain calm in an emergency situation
  • Must be able to read and write in English at a level sufficient to successfully perform required duties
  • Understands and carries out both oral and written instructions in an independent manner
  • Must be able to recognize mechanical safety hazards in buses and shuttles
  • Must have previous experience preparing reports related to scheduling of pickups and scheduling of bus maintenance
  • Must meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the required duties
  • Able to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties
  • Ability to maintain valid certification as school bus driver according to state regulations
  • Physical stamina and stature to load, unload, and secure wheelchair students if necessary
  • The skill to operate electrical/manual lifts on ramp buses if necessary
  • Knowledge of proper safety requirements of individual wheelchair
  • Have good hand-eye coordination
  • Able to follow traffic rules
  • The ability to handle unexpected situations
