Job Title: Engineering Intern

Position Overview: Join the City of Aspen Engineering Department as an Engineering Intern for summer 2024 to learn and understand the roles engineers play in a municipal government setting. Our department is focused on nurturing the abilities and interests of young engineers. As the Engineering Intern you'll gain experience in data collection, field work, project management, minor design work, inspections, and regulation enforcement. The ideal candidate has an interest in engineering as it relates to pedestrian/bicycle infrastructure and stormwater management. Supervision Exercised and Received:

Essential Job Functions:
* Support a variety of engineering tasks with the goal to develop technical, social, and ethical skills.
* Assist with project management, research, field work and data collection. Examples include the following:
o Concrete Replacement Project: Inventory existing infrastructure by identifying and assigning ratings to curb and gutter, non-compliant ADA ramps and sidewalks within City limits. This requires notifying property owners of the non-compliances and meeting with owners to identify solutions. Maintaining detailed records is required.
o Stormwater Monitoring Program: Collect water samples from the Roaring Fork River at stormwater outfall sites throughout the City to test for urban pollutants. Organize data and analyze results.
o Infrastructure Inventory/Maintenance Program: Assist project manager with remote camera operations for stormwater infrastructure inspections, data collection and required maintenance.
o Construction Site Inspection (CSI) Program: Assist CSI team members with construction site inspections for noise, and sediment and erosion control violations.
o Traffic Data Collection: Assist project manager with traffic data collection in the field using radar technology.
* Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation. Examples include the following:
o Public outreach events by preparing presentation materials, taking detailed notes, and discussing Engineering's project with the community.
o GIS data management:
* Update the City's stormwater BMP layer to maintain an accurate inventory of the stormwater infrastructure in the City.
* Update the Accident Report Map in GIS using incoming police reports.
o Research advances in urban drainage and the stormwater management industry.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education & Experience: One year studying Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field. Basic knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology.
Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook (Email). Must have a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web-based platforms.
Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a valid driver's license.
NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge, and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.
Preferred Candidate: Complex problem solving, critical thinking, judgement, and decision-making skills. Experience with Civil 3D, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS online. Self-motivated with strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Course work completed in water quality, hydrology, concrete design, traffic engineering or design are a bonus.
NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.
Position Type and Work Hours:
* Temporary, full-time, 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday.
* Evening and additional hours may be required depending on workload.
* Flexibility to work in Aspen after 5pm during rain events to collect stormwater samples is required.
Work Environment:
* Indoors: Office
* Outdoors/Off-Site: outdoor work may be required that involves varied weather conditions.
* This job will require physical presence in Aspen for much of the work however the position manager and intern will work to find a balance between remote working and in-office work. Note: housing is not provided.
Physical Demands:
* Collecting stormwater samples involves walking along the river over rough terrain, up and down moderately steep slopes and close to swiftly moving water.
* Bending: Bending or position oneself to move an object from one level to another.
* Carrying: transporting or moving an object.
* Climbing: Ascending or descending stationary objects.
* Crouching: Bending body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
* Eye/Hand/Foot Coordination: Performing work through using two or more body parts or other devices.

* Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, through use of hands, fingers, or other means.
* Hearing: Perceiving and comprehending the nature and direction of sounds.

* Repetitive motions: Making frequent or continuous movements.
* Sitting: Remaining in a stationary position.

* Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

* Visual Acuity: Ability to bring objects into focus.
* Mobility: Ability to move to traverse from one location to another.
