About this job

The mission of Fleet Services is to assure the safe working condition of the department's motorized vehicles and equipment; ensuring the operational readiness of the vehicle and mobile equipment fleet; instituting compliance programs supporting fleet preventive maintenance, state-mandated inspections, vehicular emissions testing and schedules. Under supervision, candidate will perform advanced technical and specialized duties requiring extensive knowledge and broad experience in automotive design and maintenance.

Candidates' responsibilities will include but not limited to:

- Write and review complicated specifications for vehicles, materials and special equipment from technical data and knowledge of functional needs.
- Study functional requirements at facilities to estimate size, capacity and operating characteristics for all types of automotive and special equipment including trucks, tractors, road graders
snow fighters, wreckers, cranes, refuse collection trucks, mechanical street sweepers, street flushers, etc.
- Act as a technical and general liaison with other city agencies, vendors, contractors, and others as required.
- Participate in the planning, development and evaluation of automotive purchase program as well as reviewing contract drawings and prepare cost estimates for all equipment as well
- Perform comprehensive inspections for acceptance of equipment and prepare requests for modifications to equipment, if necessary.
- Investigate new and potentially more effective types of automotive equipment as well as schedule and conduct field test and demonstrations.
- Confirm that vendors fulfills all obligations before and after delivery of automotive equipment.
- Provide technical, maintenance, and operating information for units.
- May be required to give technical direction to automotive specialists and mechanics
- Duties will require openly communicating information to supervisors, management, others etc.

Minimum Qualifications

A baccalaureate degree in mechanical, aeronautical, or automotive engineering or physics from an accredited college and four years of full-time paid experience in professional automotive design, and/or maintenance work, inspection, and troubleshooting of automotive equipment, and/or specification and manual writing for automotive equipment.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
