Job Overview of After-School Program Specialist - PT

The After-School Program Specialist will work in a pair and is responsible for planning, facilitation, and delivery of individual and group services as part of our new Therapeutic After-School Program for children living in Yonkers and surrounding towns. The After-School Program specialist will be able to provide a variety of pre-planned activities but also will have creative license and will be encouraged to develop different activities that meet the needs of the children coming to our program. The After-School program will only be admitting students who need CFTSS Psychosocial Rehabilitation services and so all individual and group interventions will need to be tailored and individualized to our students. The After-school Specialists will be monitoring therapeutic after-school services delivered to assigned clients and ensuring that they are document in the clients record and furthering their treatment plan goals. The Afterschool Team will be supervised by the Director or Therapeutic Recreation who will support the Afterschool Specialists in leverage all on and off-site recreational resources and opportunities to meet the individualized treatment goals of our after-school youth through the clinical implementation of therapeutic recreation services (the APIED process).

Schedule: Flexible Hours 3:45 PM and after, 15 hours per week.

Essential Duties of After-School Program Specialist - PT

Key duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Designing and facilitating engaging, motivating, and developmentally appropriate activities for our Therapeutic After-school program which provides psychosocial services
  • Collaborating with Recreation Department team members to design and deliver community after-school programming for children with high emotional and mental health needs
  • In collaboration with Director, develop and facilitate after-school groups using the APIED process ensuring alignment between client treatment goals and therapeutic recreation interventions along the five domains of Therapeutic Recreation (Social, Emotional, Psychological, Spiritual, and Physical)
  • Reviewing clients’ records and individual service plans to ensure activities are in line with needs; documenting client progress in agency EMR system(s) (both individual and group notes) and CFTSS/CMHRS documentation standards
  • Ensuring variety of programming opportunities which include diverse areas of interest, normalizing childhood experiences, and experiences which promote social-emotional growth and development
  • Managing and monitoring recreation supplies, budgeting, purchasing, and replenishment
  • Maintaining specialized program skills and certifications if required
  • Supports overall strategic plan of the organization
  • Ability to adhere to our organization’s core values and commitments

Essential Qualifications of After-School Program Specialist - PT

Key qualifications include:

  • Required education: High school equivalent + minimum of 2 years experience of working rec therapy, education, OT, PT, child care, camp counselors, after-school programs etc.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field preferred
  • Ability to engage youth and colleagues in activities and programs through motivational and relational lens
  • Ability to work as a member of interdisciplinary teams with strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Ability to design programming based on client treatment goals, monitor client progress, and manage client data
  • Excellent time management, coordination, and delegation skills
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point; Ability to learn additional software/programs a must (including agency EMR software)
  • Driver’s license in good standing is preferred.
  • Ability to access and utilize ADP app on smartphone or other device for access to agency programs.

Physical/Travel Requirements of After-school Program Specialist - PT

Candidates who are successfully hired, must participate in our Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training which concludes with a written and verbal test, and you will be evaluated on conducting a proper physical restraint.

  • Must possess ability to sit, stand, walk, see, climb stairs, and lift weight of up to 30 lbs. The employee must be able to meet these requirements with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • After-school staff must possess physical abilities relevant to safe facilitation of specialized program skills (i.e. American Red Cross swimming endurance standards for Lifeguarding, fine motor skills for high Ropes belaying and other technical skills, adequate sensory integration abilities for OHV/Dirtbike lesson demonstration and coaching, etc.)
  • Must possess manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard
  • Must have physical capacity to restrain or assist in the restraint of a child
  • Must be able to hear and see well enough to provide appropriate supervision of children.
