Job Description


I. Organizational Overview


Philadelphia Youth Basketball, Inc. (PYB) was officially launched in June, 2015, with a mission to create transformative opportunities for thousands of young people, especially those from under-resourced families and communities, to reach their full potential as students, athletes, and positive leaders.  A diverse and impassioned group of individuals, including leaders from the grass-roots to the tree-tops, have been working diligently to execute upon this mission by building an impactful program, a robust and sustainable organization, and ultimately a state-of-the-art youth basketball and education center to enable us to provide empowering experiences to many more children, youth, and families.

II. Primary Scope of Duties


Reporting to PYB’s Chief Mission Officer, the Manager of Early Years Programs is responsible for the building, implementation, and administration of PYB’s early years programming at the Sixth Man Center. 


The successful candidate will have a passion for children and families while providing overall leadership in building PYB’s newest age group. The Manager of Early Years Programs will work collaboratively with the program leads for Older Youth and Middle Years implementing an aligned, cohesive pathway for youth participants while meeting program goals. This position will also work collaboratively with the VP of Program Operations and Impact to ensure high-quality programming is being delivered. 


Key responsibilities include: 


  • Program Development
    • Build out PYB’s programming for early youth (ages 4-9) inclusive of PYB’s early development Academy program.
    • Build and implement a program vision for school day programming with kindergarten-3rd grade school children (public, charter, parochial, private, home school).
    • Provides leadership and strategic planning for early years programming that aligns with overall program pathways to middle and older years programming. 
    • Works in collaboration with Universal Design Manager and other program leads to build a synergistic program curriculum, ensuring continuity and age appropriate pathways for PYB youth.
    • Works in collaboration with early literacy partners to ensure delivery of early reading program goals and coordinate periodic special events around early literacy and early youth development.


  • Day-to-day operations and administration 
    • Responsible for overall program management.
    • Provides leadership and guidance to the entire early youth age programming team including program coordinators, coach-mentors, parents, volunteers, etc. 
    • Assist in maintaining accurate records related to enrollment, attendance, and billing. 
    • Collaborate with the Center Director on budget planning and financial management.
    • Handle parent inquiries, concerns, and communication effectively and professionally. 
    • Support the coordination of special events and activities within the center.
    • Visually and auditorily observes and assesses situations within programs for safety, security and to detect adherence to policies.  


  • Staff Supervision and Development 
    • Assist in recruiting, hiring, and training new staff in early years programming.
    • Provide leadership, mentorship, and ongoing support to staff.
    • Conduct regular staff meetings to facilitate communication and professional development. 
    • Collaborate with the Chief Mission Officer to evaluate staff performance and provide constructive feedback.
    • Recruit and train volunteers for delivery of meaningful program delivery and engagement. 


  • Community Engagement:
    • Foster positive relationships with parents and guardians through open communication and regular updates. 
    • Collaborate with community organizations to enhance the center's programs and resources.
    • Establish and maintain working relationships with the local schools and community based organizations.
    • Engage the local community by attending school and community events to raise awareness of early years programming at SMC. 


  • Monitoring and Evaluation:
    • Work in collaboration with our Impact and Evaluation Manager to establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the impact and effectiveness of financial literacy programs.
    • Collect and analyze data to evaluate program outcomes and make recommendations for improvement.
    • Continually enhance program effectiveness.


III. Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions


  • 5-10 years of relevant experience with at least three of them in a team management role
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Demonstrated interest in sports-based youth development and social impact
  • Strong project management skills managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and program growth
  • Strength in hiring, recruiting, managing, developing, coaching, and retaining individuals, empowering them to elevate their levels of responsibility and performance
  • Well-developed writing, communication, and organizational skills
  • Prideful attention to detail, a robust work ethic and commitment to individual and organizational excellence
  • A deep curiosity and love of learning, and a growth mindset for personal and organizational development
  • Entrepreneurial and opportunistic mindset to build a robust body of early development programming during peak and off peak hours
  • Solutions-oriented and flexible – comfortable navigating unexpected opportunities or challenges and able to stay focused on long-term outcomes.
  • Capable of working evening/weekends when needed for program or event coverage
  • Computer literacy and well-developed technology skills
  • Flexible workstyle with the ability to work in an open office environment


IV. Compensation and Perks 


This position will have a salary range of $50,000 - $60,000 commensurate with experience.
