Job Description
VP Fulfillment Operations

Red Stag Fulfillment, LLC (“Red Stag”) is an order fulfillment company for eCommerce businesses which is headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee, and was created with one mission: to redefine the 3PL experience for both clients and employees. By leveraging technology to ensure accurate, reliable, secure, and fast shipping, we have quickly established ourselves as a world-class fulfillment company.  Additionally, we understand that our people (aka “The Herd”) are our most important asset.  We have grown into one of America’s best order fulfillment companies by building a team of people who are eager to be a part of our growth.  Our core values are of paramount importance and inform and guide all our decisions.

  • We treat others with dignity and respect.
  • We sweat the small stuff.
  • We have positive attitudes.
  • We act like we own it.
  • We always seek to improve.

We are hiring a VP Fulfillment Operations to join our executive leadership team. This is a full-time role, reporting directly to our CEO and working primarily out of our Sweetwater, TN warehouse operation (with travel required).

About the role:
The world of eCommerce is moving at lightning speed, and we need an entrepreneurial, hands-on, multi-faceted builder who can honor our tradition of operations excellence and scale it to service our growing number of valued clients.  Reporting directly to the CEO and serving as a vital member of our executive leadership team, the VP Fulfillment Operations will be chiefly accountable for what we do every minute, every hour, every day – fulfillment.    Each day at Red Stag, we re-earn our clients' trust by exceeding their expectations across a number of key deliverables - and the VP Fulfillment Operations is accountable for these.  The person selected for this position will be responsible for mastering, enhancing, and scaling our fulfillment systems and processes; building new functions; launching new sites; and cultivating our internal leadership pipeline - all while exceeding daily service level expectations of our valued clients.

You are the one we are looking for if:
You understand that our business begins and ends with The Herd and our clients.  You ooze execution, optimization, and scale.  You. Get. Stuff. Done.  You’re not just “in the weeds” – you live in them.  You have a bias to action, and a mindset of continuous improvement.  You're visibly irritated when the meeting starts 30 seconds late.   When you walk through any operations environment, you instinctively take mental notes about, and brainstorm solutions to solve, its inefficiencies.  You can flow seamlessly from "sweating the small stuff" and executing urgent priorities requiring immediate action, to thinking big picture about strategic concepts impacting the 5-year outlook of small parcel fulfillment.  You love to leverage technology (software and hardware) to provide great service to your many stakeholders.  You're about your people - you're expert in recruiting, hiring, training, and developing your teams.  That's why everyone from executive peers to analysts to hourly team members would walk across broken glass for you.  By building great teams, systems, and processes, you can be in many places at once, allowing you to effectively manage fast-growing, multi-site environments.  You are ruthless and uncompromising on matters of safety and compliance.  You hate feeling behind and love building teams that think two steps ahead on decisions.  You have an uncanny ability to “connect the dots” and you know when it is time to stop talking and start doing.  You have high standards, and you don't throw around the words "perfection" and "excellence" loosely - but you live to pursue them.  Your soul is invigorated by Vince Lombardi’s words, “Gentlemen, we will chase perfection, knowing all the while we can never attain it.  But along the way, we shall catch excellence.”

You are seeking an opportunity to join a rapidly growing company and be part of the leadership team responsible for serving our two core constituencies: the Herd and our clients.  If you like the idea of diving right in, getting stuff done, and actively growing in new areas, then this might be your perfect fit.

Expected Outcomes and Responsibilities:
  • Bring an insatiable, entrepreneurial problem-solving mentality to the warehouse floor.
  • Embody our culture of humility, excellence, and respect.
  • Execute.  Period.  Full Stop.
  • Be ultimately responsible for driving excellence in our day-to-day warehousing and fulfillment performance.
  • Create & reinforce a culture of extreme process efficiency and accuracy.
  • Forecast, communicate, add, and manage new labor, facility, and transportation capacity to support accelerated growth.
  • Develop, staff, and be responsible for execution of new facility launches in various geographic locations.
  • In collaboration with other executives, build, cultivate, and deploy a best-in-class internal leadership development pipeline.
  • Rigorously measure our fulfillment performance through a matrix of robust-but-sensible KPIs, and then have the vision, judgment, and decisiveness to adjust when necessary.
  • Maintain and enhance our unbending commitment to safety.
  • Lead cross-functional efforts to shape Red Stag’s service offerings to meet client needs.
  • Partner with technology and client relations teams to identify, spec out, test, debug, and launch new solutions to better serve our clients.
  • Partner with HR team to identify, spec out, test, debut, and launch new solutions to enable our team members to have long and successful careers at Red Stag.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends in logistics and fulfillment operations and be an internal thought leader who will keep us on the cutting edge of client service.
  • Constantly pursue perfection in an effort to exceed the expectations of our clients and team members.

Candidate Qualifications:
  • A thirst for learning, getting stuff done, and serving our clients and team members that will raise the collective bar of our entire team.
  • An orientation towards growth and optimization.
  • A curiosity (along with strong, well-informed guesses) about what the future will look like.
  • Demonstrated ability to scale asset-based and labor-centric operations in a high-growth, multi-site environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams to create “customer oriented” solutions.
  • Expertise in operational excellence and Lean principles, grounded in pragmatism (as opposed to dogmatism).
  • Experience in eCommerce, logistics, warehousing, fulfillment, or parcel shipping is a plus.
  • Experience working with, managing, implementing, and even coding software (specifically WMS) is a plus.
  • Ability to hire, mentor, lead, and promote talent.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, manifesting in respectful candor and thoughtful directness.

Finally, while it’s essential for us to outline the characteristics and competencies of the perfect candidate, it might be equally important to list the types of candidates who need not apply
  • A “strategic visionary” who prefers corporate boardrooms and investor presentations over gemba walks and meaningful conversations with front-line contributors.
  • An order-taker, paralyzed by indecision until someone directs your day-to-day activity and tells you what to do.
  • A maintainer, hoping to execute the established playbook as opposed to writing it themselves.
  • A political animal, who advances via corporate politics rather than value creation.
  • A head in the sand, who wants to “just do my job” and not actively search for other ways to improve our business and team.
