Summary of Responsibilities:

The Maintenance & Grounds Technician is responsible for performing physical labor in the maintenance of all tribal facilities. The position is required to landscape or maintain grounds of tribal property using hand or power tools or equipment. Workers typically perform a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following: sod laying, mowing, trimming, planting, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking and sprinkler installation. Position will assist with open work orders, and new construction as directed by the Maintenance & Grounds Supervisor.

Requirements:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspect, operate, or test machinery and equipment to diagnose and correct minor malfunctions.
  • Clean or repair facilities to eliminate possible hazards.
  • Load, unload, and identify materials, equipment, and tribal property to distribute them to the appropriate locations according to directions.
  • Read plans, instructions, or specifications to determine work activities.
  • Measure, mark, or record openings or distances to layout areas where maintenance and repairs are to be performed.
  • Ensure all materials and equipment necessary are accounted for when work orders are completed.
  • Operate and service tribal lawnmowers, power tools, edgers and other equipment as necessary.
  • Maintain and service departmental vehicles and equipment to included washing exterior surfaces and wiping clean the interior surfaces.
  • Operate vehicles and powered equipment, such as mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, snow blowers, chain saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning saws.
  • Mow or edge lawns, using power mowers or edgers.
  • Shovel snow from walks, driveways, or parking lots and spread salt in those areas.
  • Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch, or trimming or edging around flower beds, walks, or walls.
  • Use hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge or brush trimmers, or axes.
  • Prune or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges, using shears, pruners, or chain saws.
  • Gather and remove litter.
  • Maintain or repair tools, equipment, or structures, such as buildings, greenhouses, fences, or benches, using hand or power tools.
  • Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, or trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
  • Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, burial sites, or other grounds features.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or needed.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent or the ability to obtain GED within one (1) year of employment.
  • One (1) year of experience with grounds, equipment, and vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • One (1) year of experience in the construction business.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Skill and ability to organize and multi-task – ability to prioritize tasks by importance and accomplish highest priority tasks each day.
  • Knowledge of groundskeeping and landscaping procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and preventive methods and procedures used in keeping building in orderly condition and in maintaining and repairing utility systems and physical structures of building
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their use, benefit, repair, and maintenance.
  • Must be able to read, understand, apply and retain knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with co-workers, management personnel, suppliers, tribal leaders and the general public both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform the duties of this job while being exposed to risks associated with travel between buildings and airborne fumes or airborne particles.
  • Walking, or standing for long periods of time; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping; good finger dexterity and feeling; frequent repetitive motions; talking hearing and visual acuity.
  • Knowledge of safe lifting and carrying practices.
  • Ability to lift in excess of 75 lbs.
