POSITION SUMMARY

We are looking for a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) who will provide individual in-person and telephone counseling to furnish information, support and guidance to WIC prenatal and postpartum participants that assists in the breastfeeding experience.  The BFPC also leads group educational classes about breastfeeding for pregnant and breastfeeding women. The BFPC works as part of an integrated health team to assure that high quality, cost efficient, culturally sensitive services comply with all Federal, State and local agency policies and procedures.

KEY FUNCTIONS AND REPONSABILITIES

  • Counsels WIC participants about benefits of breastfeeding and proper positioning in person and by phone.
  • Supports WIC participants who are breastfeeding or are thinking about breastfeeding by answering any questions they may have to help them to be successful in breastfeeding.
  • Assists with planning and conducting of breastfeeding classes.
  • Keeps accurate records of all contacts made to WIC participants.
  • Accurately documents issuance of breast pumps and other breastfeeding aids.
  • Acts as an advocate for breastfeeding.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School graduate, or equivalent
  • At least one year of relevant work experience, preferably in a medical setting, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to carry out breastfeeding support.
  • Must have breastfed for at least 6 months.
  • Must be bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Previous experience with WIC as a staff or participant is preferred.
