ALAMOSA COUNTY- Road & Bridge Department

REPORTS TO: Road & Bridge Director
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
SALARY RANGE: $24.00-$30.00/hour DOE
DATE ADOPTED: January 2024

JOB SUMMARY:
Is responsible for the setting up, installing, repairing, and maintaining heavy machinery and equipment, and in the fabricating of metal parts and tools as needed by the Department. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (The following are illustrative of essential functions to perform duties and responsibilities of the job.  The position may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional tasks as needed by the Department.   • Performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of county vehicles and equipment including grinding valves and rocker arms, repairing starters and generators, installing bearings and brushes, repairing distributors, replacing points and condensers, replacing backing plates, and repairing electrical wiring and automotive.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions and determines necessary repairs.
  • Overhauls gas and diesel engines, transmissions, carburetors, brake cylinders, and differentials. Repacks wheel bearings, repairs hydraulic systems, installs clutches, overhauls, pumps etc.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on county vehicles and equipment including greasing, changing oil, and checking lights, brakes, hoses, tires, and belts.
  • Performs corrective maintenance on county vehicles and equipment and determines the need and priority of minor and major repairs on said equipment.
  • Maintains records of work orders for each job and repair records for all vehicles and equipment.
  • Operates equipment as necessary to road test, travel to job sites, and brings into or removes from the shop.
  • Performs welding and machine work incidental to the completion of repair work as required.
  • Orders parts and supplies. Maintains and cleans shop and related tools and equipment.
  • May perform auto body, painting and related work.
  • Serves as heavy equipment operator and/or truck driver on an as needed basis.
  • Assists in cleaning parts, tools and working areas.
  • Performs all other work as assigned by the Supervisor
  • Ability to work schedule as assigned by Supervisor
  • Show up for work on time and ready to work
  • Ability to follow the policies and procedures of Alamosa County
  • Physical requirements listed below must be met
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge:
  • Can diagnose malfunctions and determine necessary repairs
  • Maintain records of works order for each job.
Skills:
  • Able to speak effectively before groups of people for the effective scheduling and overall performance of this new program.
  • Can Interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Can perform skilled work in repair and maintenance of county vehicles and equipment. 
Abilities:
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have an extensive knowledge and understanding of how heavy equipment and machinery functions and operates and the ability to diagnose problems without changing unnecessary parts.
  • Must have an extensive knowledge of electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment.
  • Valid Driver's License is required.
  • Commercial Driver’s License is preferred, but not required.

Moderate to heavy physical requirements needed for snow removal and grounds maintenance. Ability to maneuver uneven terrain. Duties performed in all types of weather conditions, extreme cold, hot temperatures, high winds. Position requires the ability to operate a computer keyboard and standard office equipment at efficient speed. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to sit, talk, walk, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, see, and hear. Hearing and vision correctable to normal ranges; close-up vision and the ability to adjust focus across a distance. The employee is required to communicate both orally and in writing. Employee must be able to reach and manipulate objects, tools or controls, drive, frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Employee must be able to work in an environment that can be very noisy.
