DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs

WORK LOCATION: Farmington Animal Shelter

HIRING RANGE: $14.00 per hour

PAY SEASONAL: Temporary

TYPE OF POSITION: Temporary, Full-Time

DAYS WORKED: Friday-Tuesday

HOURS WORKED: 8AM to 5PM or 9AM to 6PM

JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Works under the supervision of the Animal Services Manager and the Animal Welfare Director.

Cares for, feeds and houses animals at the animal shelter; provides maintenance and upkeep for the animal shelter.

Assists in the adoption of animals.

Assists in the process of euthanasia of animals by lethal injection.

Determines health status of animals.

Maintains records and files for the animal shelter and the animals housed there.

Assists in the intake of animals, weighing, vaccinating, aging and determining sex.

Must be able to do data entry in an efficient manner.

Works an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance.

Carries out duties in conformance with City laws and ordinances.

Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Maintains departmental equipment, supplies and facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Must be at least 16 years of age. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Excellent public relations skills. Ability to handle vicious animals and animals with behavior issues.

Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds individually.

Ability to receive money and make proper change.

Ability to work around animals without allergic reaction.

Ability to cope emotionally with the euthanasia.

Knowledge of and concern with animals.

Previous experience as veterinarian assistant, animal care and or medical facility preferred but not required.

Valid New Mexico driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years or state of current residency.

Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Must have a telephone at residence.

Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Ability to meet the special requirements listed below.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.

Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.

Ability to meet deadlines.

Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

Extensive background checks required.

This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety program.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Motor vehicle, animal capture equipment, first aid equipment, catch poles, leashes, gloves and ropes to handle animals, cleaning materials in shelter maintenance, including bleach and other chemicals.
