POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Wellness Director the Wellness Coach is responsible for the services and operations offered on the wellness floor while providing customer service which promotes member wellness in accordance with the Y policies and procedures in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Coach members in support of their desired fitness goals and desired behavior change. Regular checks
  2. Answer questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living. Maintain knowledge of wellness trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  3. Be knowledgeable and adhere to Safety Policies, Procedures, and Emergency Response Plans. Always keeping Safety at the forefront of your mind.
  4. Ability to develop and maintain high levels of customer service with members and guests. Actively listen to members to find out their needs and respond promptly and appropriately.
  5. Responsible for making member engagement calls to connect/reconnect with members regarding the various services offered within all programming and direct them to services that would meet their needs.
  6. Warmly and enthusiastically greet members and build intentional connections with members.
  7. Empower members to develop confidence and self-motivation.
  8. Conduct new member Wellness appointments, including orientation to any fitness equipment needed, as well as any follow-up communication, as necessary.
  9. Be able to effectively problem solve, taking full responsibility to remedy the situation and follow through to its completion.
  10. Identify members who may be using unsafe or ineffective techniques and make helpful suggestions.
  11. Ability to instruct, demonstrate exercise techniques and perform associated physical activities.
  12. Make yourself available and be able to work with a diverse group of members, regardless of age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, lifestyle, or fitness level.
  13. Provide members with opportunities that will increase their involvement in and sense of ownership of the YMCA.
  14. Consistently monitor member participation and provide feedback.
  15. Share wellness program information with members, using available tools and resources (e.g., handouts, schedules, and apps).
  16. Asks and answers questions (e.g., post-enrollment interview) and displays empathy in support of helping members and program participants define and build confidence to achieve their health and wellness goals based on their personal goals, cultural background, healthcare needs, diverse abilities, and interests; develops plans to meet their individual needs.
  17. Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants.
  18. Ensure cleanliness of the YMCA and regularly check and replenish supplies and check all equipment to ensure proper maintenance – report any equipment in need of repair to a supervisor immediately and place an “out of order” sign on the equipment.
  19. Products or services that are not a part of YMCA programs shall not be promoted or endorsed by any employee to any member or guest whether the employee is “on the clock” or not.
  20. Assume all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be 18 years of age or older.
  2. High school diploma or equivalent is required, studies towards or completion of a BA in Health Fitness related field is preferred.
  3. Must have a working knowledge of all principles of health and fitness, group exercise, personal training, and specialty group class certifications preferred.
  4. Current CPR/First Aid/AED required within 30 days of hire.

  3. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25+ pounds.
  4. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
