Operator Technician

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·        Responsible for the proper installation of pipelines and other utilities.

·        Carries out tasks as assigned by Foreman.

·        Aware of and responsive to safety issues related to excavation and trenching.

·        Monitors excavations and shoring systems for safety and communicates to Foreman.

·        Ensure pipe and fittings are installed in the proper manner as specified.

·        Measures and configures pipe routes.

·        Gathers material and installation tools.

·        Digs trenches, compacts earth, and backfills holes.

·        Locates installed piping systems using magnetic or radio indicators.

·        Removes old or broken piping systems.

·        Lays pipes into trenches and applies pipe spacers.

·        Installs auxiliary lines.

·        Seals exposed pipe joints and fittings.

·        Performs other construction duties as needed. 

·        Fills and seals pipe trenches.

Laborer/Operating equipment

·        Ensure all equipment is maintained and used in accordance with company health and safety regulations.

·        Warm up equipment prior to shift in cold weather.

·        Monitor fuel levels and notify Foreman.

·        Cleaning, lubricating, and performing regular safety checks on equipment.

·        Assure rigging is appropriate for picks.

·        Enlist a spotter while excavation or maneuvering in a public area.

·        Obtain Foreman approval prior to digging in an area or operating equipment.

·        Assure all utilities are located and test pitted prior to digging.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

·        High school diploma or GED

·        Proven work experience as a pipe layer

·        Detailed knowledge of construction and pipe fitting techniques

·        Knowledge of sewer systems, storm drains, and water mains

·        Experience with machine-operated trenching tools

·        Ability to read safety labels, safety warnings, and guidelines

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
