Job Summary and Qualifications

The Performance Improvement Coordinator serves as the coordinator for performance improvement activities for the Trauma Service, which includes ongoing reviews and focus studies. This position provides organization and support to the data management and research functions of the Trauma Service. These activities include managing data entry into the trauma registry, developing reports based on queries from the database, assuring timely mandated submission of state, national, and organization trauma data. Assists in guiding outreach, injury prevention, and educational activities based on trauma center data. Maintains a system for perpetuation of effective data flow. Works closely with the Trauma PI Manager, Trauma Program Director and the Trauma Medical Director.

  • Serves as a resource to the Trauma Program Director and the Trauma Medical Director regarding performance improvement activities: identification, planning, data collection, analysis, recommendations, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Assists in the definition and design of data collection for indicators under the direction of the Trauma Program Director and Medical Director of Trauma. Designs trauma registry queries, coded variables, and standard and ad-hoc reports.
  • Produces and analyzes trended data, providing specific profiles in collaboration with the Trauma Program Director and Medical Director of Trauma.
  • Ensures indicators are reported to the Trauma Program Director and the Medical Director of Trauma in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Works with the Trauma Registrar(s) to assure that data entry into the Trauma Registry is accurate, validated and up to date.
  • Works with the Trauma Program Director and Medical Director of Trauma to develop database queries for performance improvement activities and / or research.
  • Attends biweekly and monthly inter-disciplinary meetings and utilizes problem solving skills to determine opportunities for improvement. Reports performance, process, statistical data, and outcome indicators in meetings as needed.
  • Maintains a system of effective communication among physicians, nurses, and ancillary staff to achieve performance improvement goals.
  • Attends ICU clinical rounds to review patient progress and seeks out opportunities for quality improvement.
  • Responds to Alpha Activations or multi-patient activations during work hours to seeks opportunities for improvement.
  • Assists with tracking and recording patient complications, diagnoses, and procedures in the trauma registry.
  • Maintains efficient tracking of performance improvement activities in accordance with the Virginia Department of Health Trauma Center Accreditation Guidelines.
  • Assists in guiding and facilitating outreach, injury prevention, and educational activities based on trauma data as needed.
  • Maintains 8 hours per year or 24 hours in 3 years of continuing education that is specific to job duties or the delivery of trauma care to meet trauma standards set forth by ACS / State OEMS / HCA governing trauma bodies.
  • In conjunction with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Director, ensures site is prepared for Virginia Office of EMS designation survery and ACS verification survey.
  • Works with an ever-increasing level of independence, and exercises discretion in the performance of duties. Frequent communication with physicians, patients, staff, and other organizations to maintain the flow of information to coordinate patient care and to resolve problems. Works in the hospital environment, with a risk of being exposed to blood and / or body fluids. Must be flexible with scheduling needs in order to meet deadlines. Job requires frequent use of computer and walking through the facility. Lifts and manipulates charts. Travel to other locations may be required.
  • Adheres to HIPPA regulations.
  • Assist with burn service operations, as needed

What qualifications you will need:

  • Required: Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Preferred: Bachelors, Master’s Degree and/or advanced certificate in nursing or related field. Certifications: CEN, CCRN, TCRN
  • Required: Minimum 3 to 5 years’ experience in healthcare setting. Experience and excellent computer skills and proficient in use of various software and web-based applications in daily work.
  • Preferred: Experience in project management and supervisory skills. Quality/Performance Improvement, trauma patient care, project management, trauma programmatic experience; Previous Trauma Registry experience, knowledge of ICD coding AIS, ISS, and AAAM coding; EMS Experience Helpful; TNCC Provider/Instructor preferred.
  • Required: Licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Virginia as a registered nurse or compact license.
  • Required: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider 
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
