The Department: You will join a nationally accredited agency (one of only five agencies in the State of California) by the Commission for the Accreditation of Parks & Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) amongst a team dedicated to upholding the department's mission to promote community health and wellness while building a diverse culture that embraces change and continuous improvement.
Distinguishing Characteristics: Desired candidates should have experience working in the foodservice industry, and a passion for customer service. The person hired for this role will have the opportunity to serve the seniors in our community and should be friendly, calm, and patient.

Basic Function: Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, performs assigned duties relating to serving congregate meals, dishwashing, and packaging home meals for delivery to homebound seniors for weekday lunch. Scheduled hours are primarily from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Candidates most qualified will be granted an interview.
Key Responsibilities
  • Complies with all safe food handling regulations and is certified.
  • Complies with California Restaurant regulations regarding sanitation and personal hygiene.
  • Observes safety and health rules.
  • Performs unskilled and semi-skilled kitchen related work.
  • Leads volunteers using principles of teamwork and oversees their serving of food and drinks.
  • Checks kitchen equipment daily.
  • Oversees packaging food for home delivered meals and ensures proper temperature.
  • Rotate frozen home meals and distribute to ensure freshness.
  • Records food temperatures upon arrival and at time of serving.
  • Records and logs daily freezer and refrigerator temperatures.
  • Operates dishwasher, oven, steamer, microwave and other kitchen machinery.
  • Washes trays, dishes silverware, pots and pans.
  • Transports food from storage area.
  • Serves accurate food portions.
  • Maintains cleanliness of storage rooms.
  • Orders food items and supplies.
  • Keeps records of daily meals ordered and served.
  • Performs basic kitchen tasks such as mop, clean surfaces and empty trash.
  • Keeps records, for example, maintains the log for the food handler certification; tracks use of all Fats, Oils and Greases.
  • Attends staff meetings as scheduled.
Qualifications
  • Must meet State of California Tuberculosis test requirements
  • Must pass County of San Diego Food Handler's examination
  • Knowledge of food service practices
  • Experience working with seniors
  • Friendly and reliable
Experience & Education
  • Food service experience and/or education desirable.
Special Requirements/License or Certificate
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR and first aid certification
  • Valid California Class C Driver's License
  • The person hired must wear standard apparel as prescribed by the Parks & Recreation Department
Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, reach, exposure to the outdoors, and be able to lift 25 pounds

*Part time positions do not have benefits, and cannot exceed 980 hours in a fiscal year (July 1- June 30).
