We are currently seeking a Junior Meteorologist for a full-time position as part of an ongoing contract in Silver Spring, MD adjacent to the Silver Spring metro station.

Please note: Due to the secure nature of this government agency, all candidates must be U.S. citizens and be eligible for a Public Trust clearance.

The successful candidate will receive a contingent offer based on the outcome of a government background check. This may take several weeks, and the candidate cannot begin actual employment until the background check is successfully completed.

Program Description:

This government agency provides weather data, forecasts, outlooks, and warnings for the protection of life and property; enhancement of the national economy; and the safety of life at sea. It also provides marine weather forecasts and warnings of hazardous weather over much of the northern Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. This Government agency's team of meteorologists and physical scientists collectively apply their years of cumulative specialized experience in the maritime environment to provide the world's best marine forecasts and critical decision support services for mariners, utilizing a suite of satellite and in situ observations along with weather and ocean models.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Operate computers in a Linux environment
  • Operate computers in a Windows environment
  • Familiarity with ESRI software including ArcMap and/or ArcPro
  • Familiarity working with and manipulating GIS data in various formats
  • Familiarity with meteorological/oceanographic trends and climatology
  • Ability to analyze various satellite and insitu observations
  • Ability to work well with others and alone
  • Willingness to participate in and/or contribute to scientific presentations

Requirements:

  • Qualified applicants will be subject to a security investigation and must meet the requirements to obtain and maintain a NAC (National Agency Clearance) government security clearance.
  • A bachelor's degree in meteorology or a closely related field
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0+ is strongly desired. (Please include your GPA on your resume.)
  • Extensive experience working with Meteorology/Climatology/Oceanography
  • Knowledge in Remote sensing visible, Radar, microwave, Synthetic aperture radar
  • Great email and communication skills and etiquette
  • Quick learner for Ice and Snow climatology
  • Basic ArcGIS usage for visualizing imagery quick learner for tools
  • Ability to work a flexible shift schedule including day, evening/nights and weekends (12-hour shift 4 days on/4 days off).
  • Excellent communication skills in the English language - both verbal and written.
