Title: Moonstone Cove Steward

Reports to: General Manager and Facilities Director
Collaborates and coordinates projects with: Moonstone Mayor
Job Summary (Essential Functions)


The Moonstone Cove Steward is a position with year-round on-site responsibility, including responsibility for overall oversight and management of NHYC Catalina shore facilities. The Cove Steward should be a self-starter who has experience with yachting and is capable of performing various duties on land and on the water. The Cove Steward should also be able to solve various utility related maintenance problems that do not require a specialist. The Cove Steward is responsible for preparing and maintaining the facility for the enjoyment of NHYC’s members throughout the year. It is required that the Cove Steward be visible enough to maintain the security of the facilities and enforcement of various rules. The Cove Steward must be capable and able to safely operate the Club whaler. The Cove Steward may have occasional engagement on the water to assist members with setting mooring lines. Moonstone Cove is a very valuable and precious asset to NHYC that must be continually maintained, kept clean and organized throughout the house, facilities and premises.


Job Knowledge, Core Competencies and Expectations

3. A self-starter/problem solver who proactively maintains the Cove and facilities.
4. A good communicator with open and constant dialog with management and the Moonstone Mayor.
5. The Cove Steward is a friendly, welcoming and hospitable person who enjoys daily interaction with NHYC members and guests. Maintaining presence and positive rapport with 1,000 plus member and guest visitors each year.
6. It is the responsibility of the Cove Steward to immediately report any fire or safety issues to management and the Mayor. When possible, the Cove Steward will correct a safety concern without putting himself in harm’s way. All mooring and boating safety issues should be reported directly to the Harbor Master.
7. The Cove Steward shall coordinate with management and the Fleet Surgeon to maintain current first aid supplies and the AED unit.
8. The Cove whaler is for business use and trips to Avalon. When the boat is not in use, it must be secured in a suitable manner. During storms, the boat should be stored on the mooring in “C” row. The boat must be maintained regularly by the Cove Steward, weekly battery, oil and bilge pump inspections should be completed. Preventive maintenance is required bi-annually. Pulling the boat out of the water is required for oil changes, lubrication, bottom cleaning, painting, or maintaining the surfaces and must coordinate this schedule with management.
9. The Cove Steward is provided with on-site living quarters with all utilities paid. As with all Club property it is required this area remain in good working order, maintained and well taken care of for the longevity of the facility. Club materials, and supplies are to be stored in suitable storage areas--in an organized fashion. Outside of the provided living quarters, the Cove Steward’s personal items must be stored in designated areas only--and left in an orderly fashion and not unsightly. In order to ensure the club assets are looked after, club management will perform periodic site inspections.


Job Tasks/General Duties:
1. Constantly maintain, preserve and protect the Cove in a clean, and presentable manner for members and guests by conducting daily duties (as listed below).
2. Order operating supplies, charcoal, paper products, and hardware. Communicate with management when larger items are needed in order to expedite delivery to Moonstone.
3. Communicate with management weekly by email or phone. Document any accident/incident reports and forward to management immediately.
4. Advise/inform and enforce to some degree Cove rules and policies. Document any violations and inform management and Moonstone Mayor of any violations. Advise visiting guests or yachtsmen of posted Cove rules and policies.
5. Responsible for landscape maintenance-seeding, fertilizing, tree trimming, brush fire abatement, and other general lawn care. Coordination with the management and the Mayor is required for hiring specialists needed for major projects such as the spring tree trimming.
6. Maintain a secure Cove by ensuring no unauthorized persons are present, checking for guest cards and for reciprocal membership cards.
7. Complete basic construction, electrical work, painting, and plumbing.
8. Keep BBQ area cleaned, stocked and ready for use.
9. Clean, stock, maintain, and repair (as needed) Cove bathrooms and shower.
10. Care for and maintain pier, ramp and float -- set up and store as necessary.
11. Secure the Cove, floats, and boats at moorings in preparation for poor weather conditions.
12. Act as a Cove liaison for fire department, Avalon and Isthmus harbor departments, neighboring camps, yacht clubs, conservancy and other Avalon institutes.
13. Complete preventative maintenance on the Club’s Cove whaler such as caring for and bottom cleaning.
14. Maintain the floats in good working condition.
15. Remove trash daily and prepare for weekend trash pick-up.
16. Assist members with special needs. When possible, this could include assisting with mooring or anchoring problems and/or any other task assigned by management.


Daily Tasks Include: (adjusted accordingly during winter months)
Clean and stock restrooms
Clean, prepare and reload coals for breakfast and lunch barbecuing
Complete Cove trash pick up
Reset and reorganize chairs, etc.
Rake bocce court as needed
Sweep walkways
Scrub bird droppings on pier
Complete daily walkthroughs as needed for Cove security and greeting members, and guests
Complete daily repairs and maintenance as needed
Re-clean bathrooms in the afternoon
Clean, prepare and reload BBQ area for dinner use
Clean picnic tables
Set out ping pong supplies
Turn on lights, set timer


Weekly Tasks Include:
Complete basic lawn care- mow lawn, water by sections (10 minutes each)
Pressure wash tables
Complete general landscaping maintenance
Go into town for mail, groceries and general supply pick up
Prepare for weekend trash pick up
Clean and inspect battery, oil and bilge pump on the Cove’s whaler
Work Schedule Expectations:
Weekends and summer holidays are the Cove Steward’s busiest times. The “high season” is considered April through October. The Cove Steward must personally manage and arrange his working times based on the number of members and/or guests that are present in the Cove. Typically, Tuesday and Wednesday are considered the Cove Steward’s days off, except when the 4th of July or another major event falls on one of those days. The Club provides the Cove Steward a residence in the Cove, both as a benefit and also because having someone living in the Cove is a deterrent to trespassers and vandals. A typical workday will be from 7:00 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 6 p.m., adjusting on an as needed basis to best serve members and guests visiting the Cove. Flexibility is both permitted and expected. You should not work over eight (8) hours in a workday or over forty (40) hours in a work week unless authorized or otherwise necessary, as can be expected during “high season”. When absence from the Cove will be longer than 24 hours, it is the responsibility of the Cover Steward to appoint someone to fulfill his duties with the approval of management to maintain general security. Winter holiday time away and vacations should be coordinated with management so proper Cove coverage is arranged.

Education and/or Experience
1. Intermediate mechanical and electrical systems knowledge required
2. Experience in small boat handling and marine safety
3. First Aid, CPR and AED Certified
4. Open water diver certified, preferred
5. Knowledge in basic gardening, lawn maintenance and fertilizer application
6. Basic knowledge of computer systems, email use, online product ordering and Microsoft Word/Excel software system use
7. Good organizational skills
Physical Requirements:
Able to engage in moderate physical activity on a daily basis. Lift 50 lbs, work outdoors under warm sun and various weather conditions, ability to swim, dive, snorkel.
Ability to handle a very active day filled with various tasks that frequently involve lifting, kneeling/stooping/bending/reaching, walking, up/down stairs, climbing/hiking, boating, cleaning.
