POSITION: Spacecraft Thermal Engineer, Rockville, MD

OVERVIEW:  Quantum Space was founded to lead the next Space frontier with the development of our QuantumNet constellation. As part of the Quantum team, you will be a key contributor to the future of space-based data and logistics services via our state-of-the-art spacecraft platforms.

Quantum Space is looking for an experienced Spacecraft Thermal Engineer to inform and improve the design and flight of Quantum’s spacecraft. In this role, you will generate and refine thermal models and thermal control designs that increase our understanding and control of our spacecraft during development, test, launch, and long-term in-space operations throughout Earth orbit, to the Moon, and beyond. You will work with a fast-paced and tight-knit multi-disciplinary team to rapidly and truly change the future of space technology. Your passionate and relentless focus on space systems development will provide technical depth, mission assurance, and critical insights for Quantum Space, our partners, and our customers throughout the globe. RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:
  • Develop thermal models that predict the behavior of spacecraft during on-orbit operations
  • Review as-delivered thermal models and documentation
  • Generate active and passive thermal control solutions and concepts
  • Make recommendations to help mitigate thermal concerns
  • Collaborate with mechanical designers to ensure that spacecraft are produced and tested in a way that ensures vehicle thermal health
  • Mentor junior engineers
  • Develop processes and tools within the thermal analysis ecosystem to inform and streamline future analyses
  • Generate documentation and simplified models for suppliers and customers
  • Predict and document individual constituent thermal conditions during operation
  • Create standards for model delivery requirements
  • Review designs of components and assemblies for flight readiness
  • Create content for design reviews, tests, and verification activities
  • Support test, integration, launch, and orbital operations
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • BS in mechanical engineering or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
  • Proficient in building thermal models using Thermal Desktop
  • Experience with flight hardware integration and thermal vacuum testing
  • Knowledge of commercial, industry, and NASA specifications and standards
NICE-TO-HAVE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with spacecraft operations and thermal limits
  • Exposure to coatings, adhesives, and coverings used for thermal control
  • Knowledge of orbital dynamics and trajectories
  • Experience correlating thermal models to ground test data
  • Exposure to thermal modeling of electrical components and printed circuit boards
  • Experience with heat pipes, loop heat pipes, and similar thermal hardware
