Title: Expanded Learning Tutor

Division: Middle School

Reports to: Coordinator of Extended Day and Enrichment Programs

Status: Part Time, Non-Exempt, (Year-Round)

Hourly Range: $20.00 - $24.00

Position Summary

The role of the Expanded Learning Tutor, under the supervision of the Coordinator of Extended Day and Enrichment Programs, will be to create and facilitate an academically rigorous, engaging, and culturally relevant curriculum for the Marlin Academy Program. Expanded Learning Tutors operate from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm Monday through Thursday; On Fridays, 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm. Expanded Learning Tutors will operate from 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm on Intersession days. The program is composed of two key segments; supplemental Math and English Instruction and Academic Tutoring Support. The purpose of the Marlin Academy program is to support students in improving their ability to: think critically and creatively; achieve proficiency in core academic skills; communicate confidently; work both independently and collaboratively; engage as responsible citizens; and apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems. Marlin Academy operates during the following sessions; every school day after school, designated intersection dates, and a summer school session

Primary Responsibilities

Enrichment

  • Support students with Math and English supplementary instruction and academic tutoring during the core day and after school.
  • Collaborate with core-day Teachers and the Coordinator of Extended Day and Enrichment to create and facilitate a curriculum that compliments core course content.
  • Monitor and document students’ academic progress and advocate for students learning needs.
  • Maintain prompt and accurate student attendance records.
  • Plan and organize lessons, manage time effectively, and organize materials for activities.
  • Support students in completing assignments and improving their academic performance.
  • Attend consistently year-round to provide wrap-around services during afterschool, intersession, and summer school
Supervision/Safety
  • Supervise students as they transition between classes, during snack, and during dismissal.
  • Document student behavior regularly, including sending discipline referrals to an appropriate Dean of Students when necessary.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy educational environment.
  • Manage both small and large groups of students.
  • Adhere to all protocols related to adult and student safety and reporting, including mandated reporting.

  • Participate in the school community – attending school competitions, performances, assemblies, and extracurricular activities, if necessary.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Work Environment
This job operates in a classroom and outdoor environment. This role routinely uses standard classroom equipment such as laptop computers, photocopiers, whiteboards, and Chromebooks.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to adhere to the following:
  • Frequently walk across the middle and upper school campus, or climb stairs.
  • Participate in campus supervision duty each week – Monday through Friday frequency may vary based on each semester’s supervision assignment.
  • Lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand on a stool as necessary, and sit for long periods.

Qualifications

Experience
  • Previous experience working with ethnically and socioeconomically diverse youth preferred but not required.
Skills
  • Ability to plan and organize lessons, manage time effectively, and organize materials for activities
  • Ability to manage both small and large groups of students between the ages of 10 and 14
  • Ability to support students in completing assignments and improving academic performance
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with both staff, parents, and students
  • Provide students with academic support, assisting with homework assignments and projects
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members and independently on projects
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision
  • Ability to analyze facts quickly and make sound decisions during instruction and when dealing with student conflicts
  • Ability to be a “team player” and to collaborate with colleagues, parents, and community members to affect the best outcomes for students
  • Demonstrate an understanding of technology and literacy learning platforms (Microsoft Office Suite, PowerSchool, Canvas, Blackboard, Google Drive and Calendar, if applicable)
  • Professional orientation – appearance, communication, organization, and attitude
Education
  • Enrollment in a Degree Granting Program, Associate’s Degree preferred

Licenses or Certificates Needed
  • Employment eligibility will include fingerprints, tuberculosis, COVID-19 vaccination, and/or other employment clearance
Preferred but not required
  • Spanish language proficiency
  • Specialization in Math or English
