Under direction, the Nursing Supervisor responsibilities require knowledge of hospital and nursing policies and procedures, allowing independent judgment in their interpretation. The Nursing Supervisor duties include provision of managerial and clinical links between the nurse manager and department direction in their absence, and the administrator-on-call for the south campus. (Day and Night positions available. (7A-7P and &P-7A)

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Proficient with patient care supervision, management activities, staffing, and staff development.
• Assesses patient care requirements on each unit, by making rounds in the Emergency Department, and all of areas of the hospital (according to departmental need).
• Develops and implements the staffing plan for shift based on patient acuity, patient census, and staff availability.
• Serves as a resource to staff for solving clinical problems.
• Assists staff to efficiently utilize staffing resources to meet patient care requirements and other professional responsibilities.
• Provide for immediate follow-up, documentation, and communication of incidents to appropriate manager and director.
• Responds to emergency situations (i.e. Emergency codes, Rapid response etc..) and assists as necessary.
• Acts as a resource in identifying and / or solving administrative / operational problems.
• Anticipates actual/potential problems that may occur on their shift and sets shift priorities accordingly.
• Works collaboratively with nursing and ancillary staff to solve problems in a fair, consistent manner.
• Contacts representatives of departments not presently in the hospital for assistance with problem solving, timely, and appropriately.
• Reports to the administrator-on-call significant incidents and problems.
• Obtains materials and supplies from Materials Management Department for patient care when these departments are not open.
• Identifies and communicates staff needs for continuing education to the Education Manager.
• Assists staff to provide a safe work environment for patient care.
• Utilizes the nursing process as the basis for nursing care.
• Directs and guides licensed and non-licensed staff while maintaining standards of professional nursing.
• Documents and maintains data on patient’s record.
• Maintains a safe environment.
• Applies basic teaching / learning concepts to patient education.
• Provides for life support.
• Acts as a patient advocate.
• Demonstrates behavior appropriate for a professional role model.
• Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills. Directs and guides ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing.
• Promotes an awareness of patient’s age, growth, cultural, and spiritual differences.

Education: Associate degree of an accredited school of Nursing required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Certification/License: La State RN license required. CPR required. ACLS and PALS preferred.

Experience: 3 years supervisory experience.

• Broad hospital clinical experience
• Current knowledge of clinical practice.
• Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.
• Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for adolescent through geriatric patients.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Knowledge of theory, principles, techniques, and practice of professional nursing; of scientific principles and nursing research; of preparation, administration, and actions of medications; of treatments and medical procedures; of counseling and teaching techniques; of medical equipment as it relates to patient care.
• Three years of RN experience in area of specialty is required.
