Summary: 

Assists in providing pharmacy services to patients

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists in dispensing of prescriptions by compounding, mixing suspensions, counting tablets or pouring liquids under pharmacists’ supervision.
  • Being familiar with correct prescription terminology used.
  • Checks all prescriptions for completeness of information.  Verifies patient information and proper provider authorization.
  • Enters patient data and prescription information into computer system.
  • Prepares prescription labels.
  • Assists with filing of invoices.
  • Computes prices of prescriptions.
  • Assists with inventory control of medications and supplies.  Helps order supplies and medications.  Receives and shelves medications.  Checks regularly for outdated medications.
  • Provides non-drug information to patients and answers simple inquiries.
  • Operates cash register and performs transactions.  Give patients proper receipts.
  • Cleans pharmacy equipment, utensils, and work area.
  • Determines 340b eligibility of prescriptions.
  • Assists pharmacist in review and compliance of Quality measures.
  • Assists financial counselor in ordering medication for indigent drug program.
  • Attends required meetings and participates in meetings as requested.
  • Participates in staff development and educational activities.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Performs related work as required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

SKILLS:

Knowledge of pharmaceutical and related medical technology.  Knowledge of metric and apothecary systems of weights and measurements.  Knowledge of medical safety standards to assist in manufacturing and working with pharmaceutical substances.  Knowledge of prescription drugs and the dispensing function to check for correctness.  Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.  Ability to read and interpret prescription information.  Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions.  Ability to perform arithmetic computations and use calculator.  Ability to communicate clearly.

Knowledge of the 340b program preferred.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

Graduation from high school or GED

One-year pharmacy experience preferred

None required but Certified Pharmacy Technician recommended after appropriate training
