The Director of IP Engineering is responsible for the engineering, support, and health of the Inmarsat Government backbone and corporate networks. This includes all facets of IP, network security, VoIP, network hardware and all services within the overall network architecture, design, and infrastructure. The role of the Director of IP Eng is focused on ensuring optimal network design and sound, efficient network process development, implementation, and sustainment. The Director will manage staff resources, the associated Engineering budget, and determine priorities for the group. The Director and their team are responsible for a multitude of technical areas, predominately focused on terrestrial IP Network design with a focus on routing/switching, MPLS, MPLS/VPNs, firewall/security, and IP telephony in datacenter and teleport facilities. Other areas of responsibility include vendor and customer coordination’s (when applicable), Network Management System (e.g. Solarwinds, Netflow Collectors, Netbrain, Viavi Observer, etc.) planning and support, ECP implementations, and basic Project Management activities. The Director and their team will also be responsible for creating network documentation and participating in regular management briefings. A strong background with over 10 years of experience in service provider BGP, OSPF, EIGRP routing and switching design and implementation is required. At least 5 years of experience in designing and implementing service provider level MPLS networks is required. Experience with network security devices (Cisco ASA, Fortinet, Checkpoint, Palo Alto networks, etc.) is a plus. Experience with Network Programmability and Software-defined Networking is also a plus. Daily operational support includes an on call paid rotation across the team. As a global organization with a global footprint, some business travel can be expected. On average, the team travels less than 20%. Responsibilities Lead a team of IP Engineers through daily operations, solution design, project lead, and technical escalation. Ensure all fielded hardware is maintained under proper maintenance & support agreements. Create and maintain CAPEX and OPEX budgets for IP Engineering. Supervise and validate as necessary network moves, upgrades, and changes including hardware installation/configuration. Develop and support the career growth and technical development of direct reports, providing constructive feedback and fostering a positive work culture. Provide timely and accurate reporting/briefings to upper management as directed for assigned projects and operational matters. Generate engineering standards and perform acceptance testing. Provide network design, configuration, and implementation support for a service provider type network infrastructure composed of BGP and OSPF routing, MPLS routing and switching. Provide network design, configuration, and implementation support for Data center routing and switching environment. Provide customer support and guidance through backbone support as well as value added recommendations in industry best practice and network efficiency. Sales support activities as prescribed. While the majority of sales support is handled by a different team there will be instances where further expertise and/or resources will require support for bids, briefs, and technology demonstrations. Generate engineering standards and perform acceptance testing for new equipment and solutions. Develop, assign, and maintain engineering tasks, engineering goals, and objectives. Develop and maintain internal processes and provide skills training to other staff on an as-required basis, through knowledge sharing and mentoring. Lead projects with the ability to function in a highly dynamic environment. Customer Design, Development, and Planning Customer Implementations and On-boarding (RoE, procedures, diags, etc) Core and Datacenter Engineering Design and Implementation Teleport Network Engineering Design and Implementation Enterprise (HQ/Remote Access VPN) Network Engineering Design and Implementation (e.g. LAN, Wireless, VPN, SD Access, etc.) Network Engineering Lab QA/Lab Validation, Implementation, and Management Evolving Technology/Solutions QA/Lab Validation and Implementation Common Network Process Development (also delineate what the NOC is expected to do vs IP Operations). ECP Solution Implementation Skills and Knowledge Design, engineer, and implement complex IP network solutions Direct and manage multiple concurrent engineering projects. Highly proficient knowledge of Cisco Routers and Switches. Design, configure, and troubleshoot BGP and OSPF in a service provided environment. Strong knowledge and experience with MPLS in a service provided environment. Experience with LAN infrastructure – VLANs, Trunking, HSRP, etc. Experience Installing/Troubleshooting WAN circuits. Experience designing and configuring QoS – CBWFQ, LLQ, and Classification Methods. Expert knowledge and understanding of TCP/IP network technologies; DNS, DHCP, TFTP, NAT, and SSL. Experience configuring and troubleshooting Cisco IPsec (AES 256), Firewall (Cisco ASA, Fortinet, Checkpoint or Palo Alto networks), IPS, route-maps, and ACLs Experience configuring Wifi technologies (802.11a/b/g/n/ac) using Cisco or Aruba controllers and APs Experience working with Network Management Systems (e.g. Solarwinds, Packet Design, Cacti, etc.) Knowledge of SDN, SD-WAN technologies (e.g. Cisco ACI, EVPNs, etc.) Knowledge VoIP protocols; H323, SCCP, SIP Experience/Education CCNA, CCNP certifications required CCIE certification highly desired. BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field is required. Master’s Degree is a plus. Minimum of ten years directly related work experience or equivalent. Minimum of four years managing a technical group with engineering responsibilities Security Clearance - this position requires an existing security clearance, or the ability to obtain one.
