Staff Accountant Job Summary: 

The staff accountant is responsible for supporting the organization’s program fund accounting and other accounting procedures as assigned by the accounting manager or controller. This position is part of a team striving to implement best practices in accordance with generally accepted standards in nonprofit accounting.


Staff Accountant Duties:

  • Tracking in the organization’s accounting system the receipt and disbursement of program funds monthly, quarterly, and annually as required.
  • Invoicing the approximate 15-20 programs that require the issuance of monthly or quarterly invoices.
  • Preparing routine journal entries as instructed by the accounting manager or controller.
  • Preparing required reports and reconciliations for the accounting manager to be able to meet the routine reporting requirements of various funders.
  • Maintaining organized files for program funds, digitally and in hard copy.
  • Supporting the accounting and finance team in special projects. 
  • Backing up other accounting staff as needed to ensure continuing operations.
  • Own various Accounts Receivable functions including program/grant billing and reconciliation.
  • Maintains all required documentation for auditors and for adjusting entries upon completion.
  • Assist in month-end and year-end closing of the general ledger and annual external audit.
  • Prepares and maintains general ledger details and accounting records for assigned program funds.
  • Reviews monthly balance sheets and revenues/expenditures statements and periodically performs balance sheet account analysis.
  • Reviews cost and operating information to ensure compliance with grant and contract budgets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

 

Qualifications: 

Education/Experience:

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, or finance required.
  • Minimum 1-3 years’ experience in accounting or bookkeeping preferred (relevant internship and part-time experience counts).
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work well with others.

 

Computer Skills: 

Must have strong computer skills, including knowledge of Excel software programs (or similar database program). Experience with nonprofit financial software preferred. Familiarity with Google Cloud and Accufund helpful.



Staff Accountant Certificates and Licenses: Computer and file management training, benefits, wage and hourly law compliance knowledge helpful. Bookkeeping and accounting background necessary. 



Other: Ability to work independently with little supervision; maintains databases for tracking purposes. Prepares audit materials; deals with auditors and financial software specialists as required. Must have knowledge of contracts; various other duties as assigned. Occasional local travel required. 


Time Requirements:

This position is a hourly position based on a 37.5-hour work week.

 

Work Environment:

Must be able to work in a busy office environment and adapt to frequent interruptions from other members of the accounting team and also to assist with accounting-related questions from our program staff who work directly in support of Outreach’s mission.



Staff Accountant Physical Demands: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. Must be able to stoop, bend. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
