GENERAL SUMMARY

This position plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with local building codes and ordinances to promote public safety, health, and welfare within our community. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of building codes and regulations, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.

SUPERVISION
General supervision is provided by the City Administrator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conduct regular inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial properties to ensure compliance with local building codes, zoning ordinances, and land use regulations.
  2. Investigate complaints regarding potential code violations and take appropriate enforcement actions, which may include issuing citations, notices of violation, or stop-work orders.
  3. Work closely with property owners, developers, contractors, and other stakeholders to address code violations and achieve compliance through education, consultation, and enforcement.
  4. Review building plans, permit applications, and construction documents for compliance with applicable building codes, zoning requirements, and other regulations.
  5. Issue permits for construction, renovation, demolition, and other activities in accordance with established procedures and regulations.
  6. Conduct regular assessments of properties in the city limits for high weeds and grass, junk vehicles, urban blight, trash and debris, and any other property maintenance violations.
  7. Provide guidance and assistance to applicants throughout the permitting process, including answering questions, clarifying requirements, and resolving issues.
  8. Serve as a resource for the public, providing information and guidance on building codes, zoning regulations, permit requirements, and related matters.
  9. Collaborate with other departments, community organizations, and stakeholders to promote awareness of code enforcement issues and encourage voluntary compliance.
  10. Maintain accurate records of inspections, enforcement actions, permits issued, and other relevant activities using electronic databases and other systems.
  11. Prepare written reports, correspondence, and other documents related to code enforcement activities, permit applications, and compliance efforts.
  12. Provide regular updates and reports to departmental leadership, elected officials, and other stakeholders on code enforcement activities, trends, and outcomes.
  13. Any other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION
High school diploma or GED Equivalent is required.
Certification as a Code Enforcement Officer, Building Official, or similar credential is required.

EXPERIENCE
A minimum of 5 years of experience in municipal code enforcement is required.

Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in code enforcement activities is required.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of local, state, and federal building codes, zoning ordinances, and land use regulations.

Previous experience in code enforcement, building inspection, plan review, or related fields is required.

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, can effectively interact with diverse stakeholders.

Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail and accuracy.

Proficiency in computer applications and software used for record-keeping, report generation, and communication.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
Using logical reasoning to identify problems and find alternative solutions, conclusions or resolutions.

Ability to supervise employees as required.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
